Guys just a heads up.

Travelled to Nurburgring this weekend just gone, Three now offer feel at home in whole of Europe which was a blessing, I had previously turned off my data in France & Germany and used wifi when I went last year.

I used the ferry from Dover to Dunkirk at 4am, most of the journey I tried to sleep, I had connected to their free wifi to try surf the web but it was poor, it must of disconnected while I was dosing.

I expected the network to run out of signal a few miles out to sea and connect to French network once we arrived.

When I got into France noticed phone was going bezerk with text messages, I just expected these to be the usual rubbish from Three. Upon stopping for a break in Belgium actually turns out I had run up a bill.

£36 worth of data in 2 hours, why? because my phone had connected to a maritime network which isn't covered by "feel at home" and all my apps were trying to update using the maritime network. The network must of been poor as well.

Three have said its in the small print which now I have looked it is. Having never traveled by ferry before (always eurotunnel) this has caught me out and would imagine there are a few others it will catch out.

safe to say on the way back I turned data off.

Its something I'd never thought about, just expected it to run out of signal and connect to French network once we got there.

It's a nice little earner that most of the ferries seem to have introduced in recent years. There is a warning about it somewhere in the small print of most bookings or tickets on onboard info. packs, but it's usually quite well hidden.

These days I treat ferries like planes. Phone gets switched off just before I board and doesn't go back on again until after I've left the craft.

Good to see they've added Germany at last. Saves me using a German SIM in future.

Last couple of times that I was in Germany (Dusseldorf), the data just wouldn't work (even though it was showing full reception etc).

Yeh it can be really poor, In Bulgaria last year I paid for europass and couldn't get it to work. Eventually Three gave me a refund.

Especially annoying after I found out that my Vodafone Romania sim card included Roaming in Bulgaria.

Same thing happens on cruise ships, I tried to challenge it with no luck either.

I was assured Jersey would be added on September 1. Bought Mifi on monthly intending to cancel when back from holiday.

Started munching data at the airport on landing on September 4, feeling smug......

Checked my account next day and £7 charges! E-mail customer service. Reply promised in 48 hours. No reply so phoned on my Tesco mobile.

After I insisted they called me back with an explanation that did not try to argue I'd used 15 GB in 4 hours. Apparently launch delayed by a week. My £7 credited.

Now cancelled.

I would bin them off but no other network offers the roaming data and I'm a heavy data user.

Vodafone does. Not throttled too, 3 is heavily throttled when roaming.

Vodafone Euro Traveller is great. £3 a day and you can use your home bundle whilst abroad.

problem is what are Vodafones tarrifs like because I'm on three £20 a month for unlimited data, unlimited text and 200 mins including 30gb tethering.

Just looked on Vodafone they do (at the moment) a £25 sim only contract with 25gb and 4gb roaming.

Not quite the unlimited data and roaming I get with Three but the closest thing. Been having a few issues with 4g at home as well recently it used to work brilliantly but recently struggle for H+ at home.

Might investigate Vodafone.

lots of 1 stars there.

Just had a mate over who's on Vodafone, says the internet abroad is good...... Had 0% signal at my house.

Can't understand why I've gone from (on Three) 4g in house to struggling for H in the last 2 months, possibly taken out of service a mast?

Worth knowing, thanks. It's a while since I've been on a ferry!

On a positive note, recently back from a week in Amsterdam on business. Talkmobile Roaming data at 4p/megabyte which is a major reduction from last year. Monthly bill was under 25 quid.
