I'm after a New TV.

Now my dad is TV / tech mad he's got loads of them and spends a fortune on the bloody things.

So what I've found is the expensive Sony he has is to be honest st, the pictures nice but the softwear seems to be crap, playing up when asking for things like YouTube. Never thought I'd say that as was SONY mad.

His Samsung is ok but I don't like the way you navigate around it.

Now I have a tv in the back room of my house it's the smallest (32 inch) I have but the most used.

It's a 5 or so year old philips ambilight.

I love this TV, first off it feels very well made, something I have found with all my Philips products

Second the ambilight which I thought was a gimmick is a really nice feature and somehow adds to the atmosphere

The remote is great to handle and the picture is good, and finally the best thing about it is how nice it is to navigate / find things. It really is a very good layout. That matters to me.

However I want the new one with Internet so I don't have to have my Xbox connected anymore. Yeah they have Netflix but apparently no on demand from channel 4 5 and itv.

First of why ? Secondly anyone know if you can somehow add it as Philips have really won me over with the current set

What do you want to do with it? How big do you want? What's your budget?

I'm very happy with my Samsung and as I understand it, it's pretty hard to beat them at any price point.

I bought one these: PANASONIC VIERA TX40DX600B It's lovely.
I believe the decision came down to the Panasonic with a less attractive surround and a Samsung that have been having some software hiccups.

I have a sony and the os is great but I have the os prior to the sony androids which were an issue when released. I believe the newer versions are better.

A fire stick will get you Netflix and BBC I player but 4OD was tied to Samsung not sure if it still is. 4od sucks though. The adverts are 15 minutes long and if it crashes you have to restart the programme along with the adverts.

+1 vote for the comment above about the Panasonic Viera. I had a 42 inch Plasma Viera from 2009 to 2011 (when living in the US) and loved it. People mention power consumption with plasma but it barely made the electric bill go up at all. The blacks were stunning. Currently we have an LG 1080P and it has been running great for 5 years now. I'm looking to get a 4K display hopefully next year and LG seem to make some decent ones. All my computer monitors are also LG. Very good brand.

Inbuilt "Smart TV" software and functionality will always be a compromise. It is rarely updated and is just tagged on to make it "Smart"
Best funcionality will always come with an external box like NowTV, Tivo, Sky etc
If you are insisting on it being in the TV, your best bet is to go to areal shop where they can show each interface to you. It is a very personal thing, what you are prepared to put up with when it comes to slow interfaces. What is ok for other people may not suit you.
Sounds like you need a real geek who researches everything rather than just their own personal experience on their own TV.

We bought a 2015 Sony 4K running Android in December last year, the picture was and is stunning but the software was utterly appalling and just about unusable. John Lewis were great as they let us run right up to 3 months before we decided to change it.

We finally decided to go Samsung as this seemed to get the best reviews and decent quality, but then JL stopped selling it which nicely coincided with Sony finally starting to update the TV with software that actually worked. Finally we now have a stable TV with a great picture that rarely seems to go wrong. Don't even have to re-boot it very often.

I think in future it would be nice to just get a dumb screen with an amazing picture (something that doesn't need booting, just turning on and off!) and a media box that can provide the content.

Well i'm hoping the 2016 Sony google tv thingy is better than last year as it turns up next week.

Thing with tv's is you can't change the picture quality, everything else can be fixed by adding an external box but not the picture.

I would say that you should also play with the picture settings to get a picture that suits you rather than rely on default settings which can be pretty bad. Worth googling sites on the web for advice.

And measure twice, buy once.
