It's an iPad Air 2 64gb, had it 2 years last month and running iOS 9.3.1 (not keen to upgrade to iOS 10 just yet until it's sorted)

I'm not really sure what's happening here, for the last 2 years I've been using a genuine charger with the longer 2m cable, again genuine from Apple (this is 2nd cable as the first mushroomed and split after 6 months, this ones done the same after 5 months but has been fixed with some electrical tape and been fine for the last few months) 25 quid!!!!!! fking swiz!!!

I've noticed the battery charges fine when it's fully switched off, but it's not charging when is on and the battery power keeps going down & down until it goes off, then can't charge at all unless it's switched off again and left for a few hours.

I bought a new 1m genuine power cable yesterday, tried a different Apple adapter (the smaller 3 pin one) and tried powering it from a power bank incase there's a problem with the socket in work.

Tried charging with it on but in airplane mode....still the same.

So tried a reset holding the home & power buttons down....again still no joy. Just will not charge up when it's switched on but the charging symbol does come on when I plug it in.

Any ideas please gents!

Could the battery be on its way out? Typically I decided to just keep this and switch to the data only contract in August after my 2 years was up with 3 instead of getting a new one!!!!!

Have you tried closing all apps (double press home button and then swipe each one to close it) then doing a hard power reset (press home and power buttons together for 10s until you see apple logo appear) ?

Not sure how your Apple cables mushroomed, mine are all fine - have you damaged the lightning socket in some way ?

Try a new iPad charger (the larger one) and a new cable and make sure the cable isn't bent, keep it straight and not under tension.

Is it getting exceptionally hot when charging whilst on?

are the are blotches or discolourations visible on the screen when on?

I had similar on my old IP4, and it turned out the battery was on its way out (around 18 mths old)

Took it in-store and they replaced it FOC, they said with age and lots of use sometimes they just do this.

Check which apps are using location services (I found tripadvisor was especially bad for consuming battery)

If battery life in general is getting worse, then one of the things I've had work in the past was to do a factory reset, restore from backup and then do a couple of full charge/discharge cycles (had it playing youtube for 4 hours non stop), followed by a full recharge with all apps turned off.

That seems to reset it's internal battery monitor which can cure a whole multitude of ills with battery live and charging issues

Something similar happened with my iPhone last winter, where it was so hot it wouldn't charge in the car. I was driving back from the alps at the time, so stuck it in a freezerbag andsubmerged it in the snow for 5 minutes and that seemed to cure it temporarily smile (until I got home and had the time and facilities to do a couple of cycles as described)

might sound daft but have you looked at/cleaned out the lightning port on the bottom of the ipad where the charger gets plugged in?!?! I had an issue like this with an old iphone, would seem to register the charger being plugged in (eg beep/vibrate) but then wouldn't actually charge. turns out all the fluff and crap in the bottom was just enough to stop the charger hitting the contacts correct

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I can't back up & restore it until I get home in a fortnight (working away) but I'll give the Lightning port a clean tonight & take a look at what apps are running etc. Need to get it sorted, pain in the arse this!!!
