It is ( Xero is an NZ based company ), cloud/sas will and is taking over big areas.

But from MS's point of view they are not going to prevent you from running an old SAGE system. They also dont stop you moving on. Its a pain in the arse to support old stuff (both software and hardware) but thats what their corporate customers on the whole want.

I've mostly stuck with windows 8.1 as there are aspects of 10 I really disagree with.
Yes I do like the fact that some companies have sprung up to take care of small businesses.

Before with Sage it was all geared up towards larger companies, same with card processing.

Then izettle and the like came along and there really is no excuse not to accept cards.

Ive had my Pro just over 4 years now. 15 inch model non retina with the cd drive. Served me well, still fast with decent battery life. It even had water spilt on it in 2014, died then decided to come back to life 6 months later. Worked fine since.

Now to my point. I made the mistake of looking at new 13inch with touch bar. Mine now feels like it should be in beamish museum so man maths says I need a new one.

Where is the best place (i.e. where im likely to get a decent price) to off load old macbooks. Ebay or one of these online buy it how it comes sites?

E-bay will get you more money but you'll possibly have to deal with timewasters and scammers.

The sell it now sites will be a lot less hassle but won't give you much for your machine.

Pick your poison.

Maybe not the best price, but least risk would be Apple themselves: http://www.apple.com/uk/recycling/

How much do you think it's worth? If it's more than a tenner, avoid ebay at all costs. It's a minefield for sellers.

Maybe put it up on Gumtree with a price? Or ebay buy it now, cash on collection only?

Do they even give you anything for doing it that way?

Buy Apple product for £1500. Recycle with Apple. Apple pop it in the refurb section for £1000. hehe

I've just tried this and they appear to offer £0 for MacBooks, unless I'm being very dim. Not a great deal considering my mid 2014 Pro will clear £700 privately all day long.

It's a shame Microsoft aren't cashing in, as I, like many others it seems, am heading over to the Surface.

Technical question about the new Macbook Pro....alot was made of the USB-C on the Macbook 12 and in particular how the laptop could be charged using a high powered portable charger (much like the smaller versions some people use for their iPhones etc). Is this still the case with the Macbook Pro Retina that has just been released?

To me this would be one reason to go for it, given that you would not need the charger whilst travelling.

I had this at first, they I tried it again (pasted the exact same thing in, so not an error) and got through to the bit where you select the condition (all good), it finally told me it was worthless...which is nice, for a 2 year old MBP boxed in mint condition.

Yes it can be charged with a big powerbank, but only while it is sleeping.

Looking for some help regarding MacBooks......if I may?

Latest HP Windows has suddenly died (due to my son dropping his cereal bowl on the keyboard which has shocked the HDD into failing)

On average, our last three laptops have managed 3 years before giving up the ghost in some way.

Most were around £350-400 when purchased so hardly bargain basement.

Seriously considering a MacBook as an alternative as we are Apple based on everything else, phone, tablets etc.

What advantage does the MacBook have over a conventional laptop I've used so far, is it likely to be more reliable and worth the additional up front cost?

Not if you're throwing cereal on it. biggrin

Seriously though, I would have said £350-£400 laptops are bargain basement products when compared to Apple. Apple don't sell a laptop that costs less than £1250 now. Spending £1250 in PC territory gets you a high end laptop rather than a base spec MacBook. At that price range you're basically buying the brand.

Edit to add the bowl was empty.

We're looking at a basic MacBook Air.....

My current MacBook Pro is 6 and a half years old. I'm about to put a new battery in it, apart from that It'll be sticking about for a while longer.

New HDD shouldn't cost much?

It's likely to be more reliable and more likely to be repaired at no cost to you if something does go wrong. But it's a gamble and regardless that alone won't justify the cost, IMHO. The software is vastly better, especially if your son is of an age where he has any interest in learning about computers, but if your only issue is once every three years a £350-400 laptop dies a Macbook is probably not the answer.
