Do anyone know if you can walk into an Apple store and buy one of these today? Delivery online shows Tuesday as earliest delivery. A work colleague has been suckered into getting one!
No you cant. The basic one without the fancy new options bar is out next week and the ones with the new tech in about 3 weeks time.Digitalize said:
New GPU does actually look pretty decent from AMD, decent speed bump which should drive a 5k display and have more than enough power left over to do other things. Something my 2014 rMBP struggles with.
You really think so?? This was one of the most disappointing aspects for me. It's not even as powerful as an Nvidia 1060 which is their current low end card. For the price they are charging for the thing, I'd expect something more than a £100 GPU shoved into it.ukaskew said:
Even the iPad Pro, which seemed to be heavily marketed towards photographers, is no real use to most professional photographers, where as something like the Surface Book or Pro actually have the functionality to deserve the 'pro' name.
I'm a photographer and I bought an iPad Pro and it's only ever been used in meetings to show a portfolio. It literally does nothing else even though when I bought it I had planned for it to be used as a tether tool.ukaskew said:
Somebody said earlier 'what are they doing with all their billions?', I think that's a good question. Surely they have the staff/funds to be able to put out an updated Mac Pro, or give us a few more options with the Mini, etc?
If you ignore the cash mountain for a moment, then it probably makes business sense. Phones represent around 60% of Apple's revenue - and phone/tablet revenue is 5 times that of laptop/desktop computers. There's a lot more profit to be made by releasing new phones or tablets every couple of years than new compuuters every 3 or 4 years.Having said that though, just what are they going to do with all that cash?

What's the deal with MB Air? The event implied that it was game over but it's still very much for sale today.
The 13" Pro is the same weight and almost as thin, so it's just replacing the Air. I assume they're still selling it so there's one 'cheap' entry point. Realistically the MBA is replaced by the MacBook already.craigjm said:

I'm really only comparing it to what it's replacing, since for me as nice as other machines are, and their impressive specs etc, it doesn't matter as I need OS X to run the software I work with.Everyone in the household has Macs as the integration with the iPhone and iMessage makes life so much easier -- but I think Apple have slightly lost the plot to remove the USB ports and to a lesser extent the Magsafe charger. I always thought the magsafe was such a great idea and wondered why others didn't do it -- I have clumsily tripped over the cable in the past and been relieved just the connector popped out.
And the USB ports .... I have got used to just carrying around cables for phones and the plethora of other things that use USB to charge and just plugging them into the computer. Now I have to have an adapter and one per port presumably? Otherwise there won't be enough power to charge several devices from one. Sigh.

A friend moved from Tesla to Apple to work on Titan ('presumably', he's a firmware engineer specialising in EVs), 12 months later he's at NextEV. No idea what they're up to at Apple but they can't seem to make their mind up. TB3/USB-C can deliver vastly more power than USB-A could, so you should be fine carrying a small USB-C to USB-A Hub. Or replacing the cables with USB-C equivalents, they shouldn't be that expensive really. I can't envision a place where I'm mobile enough where a hub would be annoying but I'd also be plugging in more than one device.
A few reasons have made all releases lately a bit iffy, CPU and GPU makers aren't innovating as fast, even Microsofts latest Surface stuff is using 'last gen' chips, and it could be a reason Apple switched to AMD for the GPU this time, even if it is more mid range rather than top spec. Along with small spec bumps comes the exchange rate meaning all U.K. prices have gone up. Put the two together and it's a real blow. Microsoft have impressed by doing some hardware innovations, but even their Studio which is aimed directly at professional use is pretty weak really, still using I think a 970 GPU and 6th Gen i7, all mobile chips of course too.
It's just a shame Apple have tried to hype up what is a fairly mediocre bump in the MBP, they've introduced this huge track pad, but no Apple Pencil support for example.
I'm also a bit surprised they didn't keep MagSafe 2, but also say it can be charged via USB-C.
