Currently have a mac air mid 2012 and was waiting for the big reveal like most of us. After sleeping on it, decided the new pro's just seem super underwhelming given the wait from the previous releases, so sticking with Mac, have decided to just opt for the Macbook with the 512Gb memory upgrade and will use that for 2-3 years.

FYI, if you know anyone flying soon, Dixons travel still have the pre-rise price, so I've just reserved one for £1199, having said that, still waiting for the formal confirmation, so it still may be revoked, but compared to the list price of £1549, my fingers are crossed.

Will sell the air, and most likely the Mac Mini and use this as work / home / everything machine. I don't do anything intensive, just the usual documentation / web browsing etc so this should be fine until the next disappointment frown

I'm also a bit surprised they didn't keep MagSafe 2, but also say it can be charged via USB-C.
It does seem bonkers, particularly the new entry level Pro (which kinda replaces the Air?), two ports! Plug it in at your desk and have a monitor running (as many do when at home) and you have nothing left aside from a headphone port.

Even with wireless printers etc that's still remarkably stingy considering they need to be used for absolutely everything that still uses a wire aside from headphones now.

I think the idea is that you use the new monitor you've just bought as a glorified docking station, using a single usbc cable to power the laptop and connect all its devices...

I've no idea how these things work, but will a single USBC connection from a monitor/hub power the laptop and still have the bandwidth to (for example) edit video/photos directly from a portable drive connected to that monitor/hub?

have regular macbooks gone up in price now also, or just the last range of pros?

You can still get the outgoing 13" MacBook Pro in the Apple Store, so seriously considering speccing one of those up.

Apologies for the source, but came across this today...

Need to stop thinking about 1 port = 1 device.

With USB3 I currently pipe 2 drives through it, one of which I'm using to edit video off of. That USB3 port is good for 5Gb/s, so enough for what I need. TB3 (which is what the ports actually are, TB3 is fully compatible with USB-C) is rated for 40Gb/s, so 8x quicker. More than enough to plug a multitude of drives, devices, and a 5k display in through one port. Four of them really is overkill, it's more for people wanting to plug individual devices in to the port, which as you can probably tell now is a bit of a waste.

The entire range of computers went up, apparently the £/$ exchange rate is why Apple have done this, but nobody on Pistonheads has any clue or opinion on why that has happened, something towards the end of June or something ;-)

I am unsure yet as to what to do as yet. I want to replace my 2012 15" rMBP but would prefer something with a 15" screen. That leaves me with the option of replacing it with the new rMBP or one of the windows based laptop alternatives. I am not sure if the new rMBP is worth the price tag so I won't be pre-ordering it . I will go and see it once it's on display at the Apple stores. In the meantime I will have a look at the Dell XPS and other rival laptops.

As a photographer I think an iPad Pro, with Lightroom syncing to my iMac, would probably work better for me than my MacBook, which I need to run a separate Lightroom catalog with when I'm away from the office.

With very few moving parts, other than the keyboard, I'm hoping my MacBook will last more than 2 or 3 years.

As mentioned above, I think TB3 is great, being able to dock everything with one cable is amazing.

Annoying that they dont bring their products into line. Get rid of the headphone jack on the phone and so there will be more headphones released with lightening connectors and then keep the old style jack on the new computers.

This is what I kinda bought the iPad Pro for but cannot for the life of me figure it out. If the iPad Pro could totally replace the MBP I need to get my camera to tether to the iPad directly to show previews and stuff. Otherwise you still need to take a MacBook to a shoot, have everything connected to an access point and then wait for everything to upload/download and sync.

The ideal for me would be that the iPad Pro will suck in the JPG's from the camera, preview them and allow clients to rate and select as we shoot. Not figured it out yet. Seems impossible right now.

I've tried Lightroom Mobile and it took a whole day to sync up a days worth of previews. My clients don't like the LR online interface for ratings/selects and have specifically asked me to upload selects to DropBox so they can download and catalog themselves. Very strange and adds in an extra step my end of getting their selects all marked up in Lightroom properly.

Just wish the iPad could be used on a shoot the same as a MBP could without needing to do anything else. Then I wouldn't need a MBP at all. Just stick with the iPad Pro and then an iMac / Mac Pro back in the office for editing. I've been thinking of selling my iPad Pro as it just sits doing nothing until someone asks for a meeting and wants to see portfolio, then it gets used.

... But you'd be mad to when you can still get them at the old price from John Lewis, or even cheaper from Amazon

Interestingly, the £1449 price of the entry-level "new" 13" model is exactly the same price as when the 13" Retina MPB was introduced in 2012. Since then it gradually dropped to the £999 figure (we got one from costco for £899!)

I am at nearly 3 years with my 13" rMBP, it is still running fine, just the 256gb SSD is too small, I do lots of music stuff and the files are wav so soon gets gobbled.

I have been waiting for the new Pro, hoping it would be like a 13" Macbook but with hdmi on it and a legacy usb port along with power. I loved my Air but prefer the screen of the rMBP hence why a Macbook appeals so much.

Seeing the new one made me think I might as well just get a 12" M5 Macbook with the space I need.
Was then a bit gutted to see the 512gb version is now £1549! Which then made me think may as well just get the Pro, but as sleek as it is, it is still no Air or Macbook, and it is £1629.

Anyway, after thinking long and hard, for 30 minutes, decided to order a 2016 Macbook 1.2 M5 with 512gb from Very as they have 10% cashback on the macs at the moment.
Nearly went for a base Macbook Pro 512gb at £1259 from them (interest fee too) vs £1499 at Apple but decided the Macbook will do, plus it was £1169 with interest free vs £1549 from Apple.

It seems I need a dock regardless whatever I buy now, so the Pro has lost some appeal and I am sure more people will think like that.
I used a Macbook for a day recently and really liked it, so fingers crossed I will long term, if not I will move it on.

As has been mentioned, the 12" Macbook is available at the old price from other outlets, although I'd advise being quick, before they put their prices up to match Apple.

I idly looked over Costco for just this earlier - seems like Mac/MB/MBP have all disappeared today....

All the Remoaners are at it again, blaming Brexit for the £500 price rise.

Personally I think Apple are just using Brexit as an excuse to jack up their prices.

Do a dollar to pounds conversion and it's nowhere near the same. Then theres the VAT the greedy bds add to most things.

Dollars to Pounds + VAT and it's nigh on identical...

Choosing the most expensive model for biggest possible price variation.

US - $2799
UK - £2699

$2799 = £2303 + 20% = £2763

You have to remember US prices are pre-sales tax, where ours are after it.

So, one of the things that I feel a little limited with my existing 2011 MBP is the number of screens I can run. I think there is a way to run two external but it is not that slick from what I understand.

But with the new MBP and these 4 Thunderbolt ports, would I be correct to assume I could run 2 if not 4 external screens if I wanted?
