Hi, it's 3 years since I asked this same question, son was 8 then, he's 11 in a couple of weeks time.
Currently has a little shuffle but that has no display. The Sandisk was recommended 3 year ago, I still use and love my Cowon X7.
Are there any new options recommended?
THanks

Been looking at an iPod alternative for a while,I still like to have all my music on the machine rather than streaming stuff. Good if you're out on the SW coast path or halfway up Snowden again.
Got really hacked off with iTunes, the clonkiness of it and how half the track content is missing after reloading etc.
Plumped for one of these bad boys, although a Sony Walkman ZX was on the radar

Sound quality is vastly superior to iPod touch, proper volume levels. Go well with B&O 'phones. Will take a bit of jigging on the menu structure but should be worth it !

I have a Sony Walkman NWZ-E384

I was using my iPhone 4S for all my music since I have a daily commute of 70 miles total, so I plug it in to the car head unit. When I first got the iPhone, the iTunes on it was great, so easy to use with the 'album' covers displayed in a mosaic format on the full screen ; so easy to just select the CD and play it.....which was all I need.

Then the 'upgrades' started....

With each subsequent upgrade, iTunes got progressively more difficult to use IMO. In fact I now never use the iPhone for music.

I bought one of these Walkmans a couple of years ago and they are brilliant. You need to download the Walkman Content Transfer software to enable you to convert iTunes files across into the Walkman, but it really easy to do.

As has been said above, I find that the Sony sound quality is way better than the iTunes compressed files, and the screen on the Walkman is a doddle to use. Admittedly mine is the 'basic' Walkman version ( about £70-80 IIRC from Amazon) and I would guess that the model in a previous post above is a lot more sophisticated/ has more storage space etc.
I like them so much I actually have 2... one for each car...(!) but I would never go back to an iTunes/ipod/iPhone for the reasons stated.
