i took up the offer through my employer's benefits system of 'multi-gadget insurance" which covers up to 10 'gadgets' owned by anyone in the household. Sounded pretty good deal overall at i think is about £15 a month. I've had the policy since April and not had to use it, but managed to break the screen of my iphone over a week ago so thought I'd use this policy to sort it, as the phone was out of warranty and i didn't have applecare. Incidentally the phone stuck to my arm when i was on a call on a different phone, and then dropped to the floor when i moved - most annoying rolleyes

I made the claim request on the 17th, and had no response whatsoever until 19th. Then I was told to provide proof of purchase, which I did within the hour. No reply again for 2 more days... whereupon i was getting a bit tired of waiting, so I called them and was told to provide further docs. I asked on the phone if there was anything else i needed to provide, as i was on, and the guy became really defensive! First alarm bells sounding... they finally came back to tell me i could claim (oh thanks so much) and that the courier would be in touch. Another 3 days pass. They finally call me to let me know that i need to leave my unpackaged phone with the password at the mail room of my office (more alarm bells, big loud ones) and that that it would be 2-3 week repair and return time. So basically nearly 5 weeks end to end.

I've been thinking that must be atrocious service... hoping you might give me some perspective?! Anyway I told them to fk off and went to the Apple shop and they had it fixed within 2hrs. Yes £119 instead of £25 excess but seemed worth it to me... should i cancel this policy or are they all this bad / shouldn't use insurance for screens?

No - definitely keep this policy. It seems like a good deal!

Maybe I should just be thinking about using them for replacements only? i.e. not for damage repairs

Its just possible that the one who said it sounds like great value is being slightly sarcastic

Not much of an employee benefit @ £15 per month for 10 gadgets.

If you really want (need) gadget insurance, there are much better deals around:

http://www.money.co.uk/gadget-insurance.htm

Given your recent experience, I'd cancel the existing policy immediately.

Worth checking if you're covered (or can be covered) for these things on your home contents insurance policy.

For example, I have a Direct Line policy with personal possession cover and it covers possessions (inc phones, cameras, laptops etc etc) for accidental damage, loss or theft up to total value of £6000, with a single article limit of £1500.

I have mobile phone cover via Natwest, my lad decided my phone needed to go into the toilet one day, I rang Natwest and they arranged for me to collect a new one from the local Carphone Warehouse the next day, I just had to hand in my old damaged phone as swapsies.

That's good to hear, I have phone insurance as part of my Natwest account, but didn't know what the replacement/exchange time would be like. Did you get exactly the same handset?

My home insurance would only cover smart phones up to £500, which doesn't really work for iPhones.

yea i'll probably sack it off in march when it ends. The issue with finding decent cover in the market is that it tends to focus on the words of the policy, not the reputation of the claims management service etc. Not going to pay for a premium bank account to get benefits though.

Dont forget to claim for the next gadget that goes faulty and is not urgently needed before your policy is up
Another gadget is bound to fail in the not too distant future, they are always failing in one way or another

My premium bank account is the same price as you're paying for your insurance.

Is it me or does this seem like a scam or something.

Take 15 a month takes ages to sort out a claim and hope people cancel the policy after seeing it will take a month to sort out their phone they use on a daily basis.

All the premiums upto this aren pure profit.
