Bought phone from GiffGaff...no charger, WTF???
Discussion
I'm thinking about the variety of iPods and iPhones that my OH and I have owned between us. There are at least three different types of connector. The OH has an iPhone 6S. I have an iPhone 4S. If I bought a 6S and it came without a charger I wouldn't be able to use the one from my 4S, judging by what the one that came with me OH's 6S looks like.

Thats a little harsh. Apple changed from their old one to the Lightning. Thats one change over ten years - you've just got bad timing Android et al have gone from Mini to Micro and now to Type C in a slightly longer time frame, but thats two major changes (which lead to boxes of old cables and annoyingly wall chargers)

given the rate at which USB plugs and sockets seem to change it'd be doubtful that it'd fit even if you did.
I'm all ears. How quickly do you think they change USB specifications?Same thing gets said about Apple chargers. Even though they've only had two versions (3 if you include the first gen using firewire) over 14 years. USB has had more changes (Micro A/B/AB Mini A/B/AB, the recent type C), but only a few have ever been in real mainstream usage. I've tended to use the same charger on most of my phones and tablets.
Whatever, you'd expect an electrical appliance to come with the bits needed to operate it, not for the seller and/or the manufacturer to assume that you have bits left over from a previous one which you can use. Having a "delete charger to help save the planet" option on the website would be one thing, but having it missing by default makes foolish assumptions. What if the buyer does have a compatible charger but is expecting to sell their old device, along with its charger?
Not all chargers are equal and you should use the charger supplied by the manufacturer.

To those mentioning cheapy xhargers.
Not all chargers are created equally. Those really cheap ones are probbably 550ma at best, whilst ones you get with tablets tend to be 3A
One charges quickly and even 30mins will bump power levels significantly... One will only be of any use during an overnight charge

What is more important is did the advert say there was a charger? If it didn't and you bought a phone then well.. you bought a phone....not a charger, regardless of the fact that every other phone you bought came with a charger. Whilst it may be annoying, you know what they say about assumption...it's the mother of all...
In the old days, electric devices came without plugs. That changed, and I thought it was something to do with the law - i.e. being fit for purpose at the point of sale?
Obviously a phone is powered by a battery, so technically would meet that requirement - but it is acknowledged as a rechargable device, so selling it without something to recharge it seems dubious. (And in my opinion, you can never have too many chargers).

The phone is actually responsible for regulating the current down to the correct level required.
That is correct, however when there was a spate of electrocutions in china from people charging their phones it was blamed on poor quality aftermarket chargers. When a couple of galaxy s7s exploded in america and people were starting to ask are they going to go the way of the note 7 one of the possible causes suggested by samsung were defective aftermarket chargers.speedyguy said:

I thought there was legislation brought in a while back to make all phones use the USB charger to reduce the amount of waste.
I wish someone would tell that awkward cant at Apple that ffs (I agree it's not helpful! But still, standards change: even if all devices used USB connections you would still be probably be caught between micro USB and USB C cables at the minute. Even if my phone and tablet have USB chargers I still have to keep micro USB for headphones, kindle etc. But all my power bricks (inc. Apple ones) work to some degree, even if some work better with some devices than others)

Am I the one in this thread that is going to call bullst on their 'please help us save the planet' line?
I would call this a textbook case of greenwashing.
I would call this a textbook case of greenwashing.
A bit like my university that declared they'd save the planet by not printing out paperwork for students.....but then demanded that students must print out the paperwork
All about cost reduction
