This has been fitted to the telegraph pole opposite my house today. Any idea what it is?

Something to do with broadband, I think.

A big connection block ? Looking at the cables on the other side that do not meet, could be a new cable with a big chocolate box connector.

It's a fibre splitter : http://blog.thinkbroadband.com/2012/11/spotters-gu...

I'm hoping they install these near me since currently my FTTC connection terminates a few miles away so only getting 8Mbit frown

The black things have been there for ages but the green box is the new bit. There was a large coil of cable but that seems to have gone (possibly connected to the green box?). Could it be part of the promised roll out of superfast broadband? That would be nice as 2mb is becoming difficult to live with!

From the link I put in my previous reply:

link said:
Once problem that arose in Cornwall was that with cobbled, narrow streets locating the fibre splitter, which is used to feed several manifolds, and usually each street one or two. The normal method is to locate the fibre splitter in a pavement chamber, the solution was to locate it on the telegraph pole.

The green box is carefully designed to be the same width as the telephone pole, and when opened the 32 fibre trays are revealed. Waveguides are used to split the light for onward distribution to the manifolds.
Inside of it looks like this:

and yes it is most likely that fibre will be arriving quite possibly in the form of FTTP (i.e. fibre all the way to your house) smile
