Was the main reason my 4s back in the day became all but unuseable, would shut down at around 30-50% charge

Thanks for this post. Mine started doing this 2 months ago. I never bothered to follow it up as it's over a year old.
Where do you live? In europe you always get at least 2 years on these devices, no matter what the manufacturer states.
In the USA it's a different story though.

My 6 has been doing this for months. Every day when it gets below 40% - It can shut down at any point then I have to plug it in and back it goes to however much it had before shutdown.

Huge PITA.
Same here. Have started carrying round a small battery pack so it can be jump started when required.

I took mine in last week on a pre-booked appointment and they ordered a repair kit - which the guy explained was essentially just a battery.
I was expecting (but not bothered) a swap for a refurb but I'll just be happy if it fixes it. What I am a bit miffed about is that I've got to go back again, having already booked an appointment, spoken to an Apple representative on chat to confirm my phone was covered (mentioning the appointment), and them confirming that I was experiencing the problem. The appointment was on Monday just gone and I haven't heard anything yet.
Exactly the same experience here! Went through Apple website support chat as there wasn't a serial number checked or even details of the affected range at the time, explained I didn't want to make yet another waste of time trip for this issue. The person at the other end said they could pre-approve my repair based on serial number and based on that visit one of their stores to be fixed.

Nah! Got to store to someone who had no clue of my visit other than my name, went through confirming my phone was an affected one, and it needed a new battery.... which they needed to order in! So that'll be two visits £5 a time to park, to get this battery finally replaced.

To answer a question above, it appears they're replacing the battery whilst you wait rather than swapping the phone for a refurb one.

For those who have this issue but their phones aren't eligible for a replacement (or they can't be arsed with the faff) try conditioning your battery following the steps in the link.

I did it on mine and not only has it stopped the annoying shutting down at 40% thing, it has almost doubled the battery life.

It's a bit of a pitta to do it properly but well worth it, give it a try.

My 6S did it, but I replaced it with a 7 before Apple acknowledged the problem. In the last week I had it, the bloody thing shut down with the battery on 30% just as I was trying to extend my parking while out shopping. I had to run back to the car to sit in it and plug the phone in to charge sufficiently to extend the parking. mad

My 6s used to do this. Following online support from Apple it hasn't done it since.

My serial number is not eligible for repair. Not that it matters anymore.

Mine is eligible, but none of the Apple stores have any availability in the calendar.
Can I just turn up without an appointment and have them do it / come back in an hour etc?

No. As above - you need to book an appointment, go in, demonstrate/explain the fault, have them order a battery kit, wait for it to arrive, then make another appointment to go back in for it to be fixed.

I've just checked my serial number and it is one of the effected ones. I haven't really had any problems though so not sure I want to go through the hassle of it being repaired. The last time I had an official recall for the home button to be replaced on my 5 it took the best part of two weeks to sort it.

Thanks for the heads up. Mine started to go mad last month when it drops below 20%. I wake up and it turns itself off with no battery power left. As soon as I put it on charge and turn it on, it jumps up to over 30% straight away? Entered the serial number and it's eligible. AS luck would have it, I'm in the Apple store tomorrow to get my son a new 7 for Xmas.

Does anyone know what the situation is with booking the phone in? Do you just have to wait in store as I don't want to leave it there for a few days and be without a phone.

Rather annoyingly my serial number is not in the affected range but my 6S+ does exactly as described. At some point between 40% and 15% it just turns off. It will turn on again after a minute or two but then shuts down within another couple of minutes.

Read my post above on battery conditioning. It's fixed this issue for both mine and my wife's 6S+ so it does work. The only pain is the step where you have to drain the battery to 1%. When it starts doing its shutdown thing, you have to keep switching it back on about 20 times, eventually it WILL stay on then drain to 1% in the normal way.

That's not the same characteristics as the fault Apple have issued a fix for.

I popped into the Apple store last night to get my boy a new 7 and while I was there asked about my 6S. They took my details and ordered a new battery there and then. They're going to contact me when it's in and I just need to drop it off for an hour while they change it over. Can't complain with the service, very simple.

I had an issue with my 6S not long back. Put it on my docking station overnight, woke in the morning to find it dead. Took it to work to charge it on the PC there but it wouldn't respond to the charging. Thought nothing of it, went to my car to change the lead; still wouldn't charge. scratchchin
Tried it in the car - nothing.
Took it home, put it on another docking station - no response but left it there.

An hour later (6pm) it woke up and started charging. Weird.

Got mine fixed today at the Apple Store -went in without an appointment, sent me to the 'express' Genius Bar lane, dropped it off and was told to come back 2 hours later. They didn't replace the handset.

Be aware if your screen is broken/cracked they won't do it, unless you pay for a new screen as well. People in front of me in the queue having a right grump about it! biggrin

I'm with Apple on that one having replaced a battery and camera on an iPhone 5 last night for a friend; to open it you have to pull the screen away from the casing with a suction cup. The customer would be even more grumpy when Apple hand back the screen bit by bit after replacing the battery smile

What did they suggest? My 6 did this yesterday from 53% showing. I plugged it back in and it shot up to 59% straight away...something obviously not right with it but it's bloody annoying!

Well, it happened to me last week for the first time in a long time so I contacted Apple's online support. Nothing wrong with the hardware apparently, it could be a bug in the backup so they've suggested restore the phone, set up as a new iPhone with no backup installed and see how it performs.

Downside is, purposefully running the battery down to see if it is happening or not.
