Looking to buy a old high milage 4x4 to ferry two young kids around in (approx 8k miles a year). I have been looking at RR sports for a while but then see a few cheap Cayenne's and have started to consider them.

Anyone run a high milage Cayenne or RRS? What was the mileage you bought it at/did you run it to?
Any model to avoid/look for?
I know the RRS are temperamental but are the Porsche's the same?

I was thinking of spending less and having some money for repairs. At these type of prices only expecting to run it for a year or two before chopping it in/being uneconomical to repair.

To give you an idea the cars I have been looking at have been:
Budget - £5000 - £10,000
Mileage - 90,000 - 120,000

both will have big bills maybe check what the servicing costs are and how much common faults are to fix then you can see what work has been done on the car you are looking for and estimate any future costs?

When looking a while back I found that some older Cayennes can suffer bore scoring. Which requires a rebuild. Turbos had a different engine and weren't affected.
Can't remember details but worth researching.

So a 4.5 is to be avoided? Is there anything that can be done to prevent bore scoring?

A 4.5 Turbo doesn't suffer the same fate so should be good but also needs the coolant pipes done if not already changed?

A 3.6 doesn't suffer from bore scoring but also needs coolant pipes and maybe a little underpowered.

Anything else to add? What about a 3.0 TDI?

Early Cayenne Turbo's suffer with the pistons getting holed it seems like a simple misfire until you put the bore scope down there.

Another option is a Touareg.

5.0 TDI

We've got one and had it for 4 years, it's been great. 30mpg, bags of torque, very comfortable. Only issue was the propshaft went at 55,000-ish as they do. Was £1,300 to fix. Apart from that, we avoided air suspension as that gets banjaxed regularly. Mine's a 59 plate.

There is nothing to prevent bore scoring. I suppose most that have failed will have had new engines by now but they weren't any different from the engines that failed. There are independent rebuilders that reengineer a fix but that would be a rare find in an old Cayenne I should think.
Some say that it's not guaranteed that bore scoring will develop. So I suppose you could buy one with a quiet engine and see how's your luck.

I have a 2008 Cayenne S from new, now with 200,000 km on it. The coolant pipe issue is on the first gen cars not this one .. I have used it for heavy towing, for offroading, Canadian winters, the lot and it has lots of road rash. The towing was tough...a 5500lb loaded trailer over thousands of miles..so about 30% of the miles were under tow.

I that time I had two major issues:

(1) Oil leakage..a very big problem at 120,000km, Big job.

(2) Camshaft adjusters this week...$CAN 4600 for both banks. Interestingly the said that the engine was pristine with zero sludge of any kind. Car has always been dealer serviced.

Beyond that it has only had normal wear items. With the towing i have been through scads of tires. I will be getting a 2019 in the Spring of 2018. very comfortable and great for long distances....
