Hello, me and the other half have been wanting to relocate to Spain for a good few years now, hopefully within the next 5 years, buying outright with savings. We own our home here in England (well i say own,we have 2 years left on the mortgage in July,so it would be ours by the tine we were to move) i am a self employed web designer, she investigates fraud for the council. Im the first to admit that i am absolutely clueless when it comes to politics/Brexit etc. Im just wondering how it looks for brits wanting to move to Spain?
Many thanks

You might be better posting this in the Spain section towards the end of gassing station.

My understanding is that while we're still in Europe, you can just relocate, simple.
Once out, you will need some kind of visa as per US, Australia, India, even if it's an instant visa like Canada.
However if you want to stay longer than a number of months then you will need a more comprehensive visa.
We voted out.
Does anyone remember Spanish holidays/visits back in the 60's? What did they have to do then?

This is my game plan also (at least for 4 - 6 months of the year) so registering an interest here.

This year I am after a 3 - 4 month let over winter to test the waters insofar as how smoothly I can transition to working from there. Have done it for a few years with month long chunks in Toronto, Dubai etc but rural Spain will have a different infrastructure and its the web speed in particular and reliability that troubles me.

Have you thought about renting your U.K. place out and using the funds to rent a place over in Spain?

I know a few people that have sold up here and poured the lot into a new dream abroad only to regret it after a while and then find out they cannot afford to return back due to stepping off the U.K. housing market....

Ahem, yes, we moved to the Philippines,, spent a bunch of money building our dream home..... then decided to leave....two months ago...

....but we did keep our U.K. house and we're back living in it as we speak. coffee

And oddly enough, the decision to move to the Philippines 7 years ago evolved from a conversation at work about moving to Spain.

My OH and I are moving this year. Our place is going through conveyancing now smile

We are fortunately able to keep 2 UK properties (main home and BTL).

There is a lot to consider and take in. Ironically we we were spurred on by Brexit as it made sense to go while we were still in the EU.

The key thing is to read up on the buying process - there are plenty of dodgy tricks you need to avoid!

For us it is a deliberate and complete lifestyle change. From a city to an 18 acre farm. A long held dream and I'm delighted we can make it happen and realistic about how much of a change it really will be.

Happy to answer specific questions. If I wrote everything down it'd be a book!

Can you specifically own land, in your name, in Spain, and if so, do you think it may change after brexit?

In the Philippines foreigners cannot have land in their name,so everything is in the wife's name, which may or may not have been a great idea...... I know that is a far throw from Europe, but I assume you have checked into it.

Yes you can definitely own in your own name.
I personally really doubt it will change after Brexit. I expect Spain will be more keen than ever to keep expat investment in!

As part of the buying process we will also apply for (and get) residency. Our lawyer has also advised we set up a company, partly for tax advantages but he also strongly feels this is a stable route for us WRT least hassle post Brexit. We just have to trust that will be true but I don't see Spaniards chucking Brits out!
