Quandry, probably solved by some test drives but I'm in the market for a performance saloon for the above budget.

It must 1) Entertain 2) scare 3) do about 20-25 mpg (I drive 50 miles a day 4 x a week). 4) Not be a mechanical nightmare (Big ask I know as all performance cars i'm looking at seem to have issues (911's / c63's). I guess I want a balance of edginess and pace with day to day driving.

Current ideas e90 m3 (how do they drive, given the weight and relative lack of torque I might be disappointed?), C63 - struggle to get one with less htan 80k on at this money but its what im mostly hankering after for the noise / power - but would need a lsd unless got the PP ? 996 3.6 or early 997s - bore score issues / ims put me off slightly. Cayman s gen2 - amazing balance but lack torque.. E46 m3 and if all else fails a IX 340/360 ..

Input appreciated.

I'm in a very similar boat here. With no great Lease deals about I'm considering getting a second hand performance car. What about an RS4?(B7 I think?)

I've got an audi at the moment, and the b7 rs4 has ticked a few boxes and always got good reports, bar the coking issue. I've sort of lost any love I had for Audi after owning my awful TTS for the last two years, I know theyre probably chalk and cheese my reason purely emotive / irrational !

Mitsubishi EVO IX MR 360

The miles you are doing could be an issue.

The good thing about the evo is the interim services are do'able by ones self ! The bad thing is they make you drive a bit quicker and therefore tires only seemed to last me 4-5k !

Probably pushing the envelope in terms of budget, size and thirst for fuel but I really like these Quattroportes.

'Cayman s gen2 - amazing balance but lack torque.'

I've recently bought one and I'd say it's plenty torquey enough but drive one and see what you think.
