Amazed it's taken them this long to close them down. Some years back you had to reset access every year or two but then they stopped that. Thanks to the OP for flagging this up - must migrate off my last few addresses.

Out of curiosity where was this posted/announced?

what about iCloud mail running on my apple stuff and set up on outlook on my desktop? would that work?
Yes, it looks like that would work. Although, even as an Apple geek, I prefer gmail.

Yes it's been a long time, but email addresses these days are essentially used to ID an individual and shouldn't really be discontinued.

I'm likely to pay for a permanent address from now on.

What will happen when Google closes down in 25 years?

You change the MX records for your domain to point to whomever you choose to replace Google as your email provider.

Sure, using email to assert identity is perhaps more fundamental nowadays but it's always been important.

And this is why I have my own domain name and just point mail at whichever ISP I happen to be using, it costs peanuts and I never have to worry about changing my external email whenever I want to change ISP.

I prefer an smtp setup rather than imap as I save all emails into Outlook on my laptop and delete them from the internet mail server.

Can I do that with Gmail?
