Firstly can I ask that replies be in simple terms that I (a very non tech geek) might understand.

Back story:
My elderly mum and dad both live at home but I think they need an eye keeping on them.
Dad has Alzheimer's and if something happened to mum I'm not sure he'd be able to use the phone in an emergency.

I was thinking it might be a good idea to set up a couple of cameras in their house that I could log onto a couple of times a day just to make sure they are both still moving around.

They currently don't have internet, cable or anything like that.

What would be the minimal amount of 'gear' required to set up a very simple system?

Many thanks in advance

With an internet connection, piece of cake but for the cost I'd just get one of those alarms they can wear around their necks that rings a choice of numbers in case of a fall/emergency.

I hear what your saying but Dad would forget to wear it, if he did he'd forget what it was for, and mum still thinks she's invincible, to the point that she's pig headed about it and has clearly stated she wouldn't wear it. (You can lead a horse to water, etc, etc)

Then you need a computer to connect the cameras to the internet for you to log in and see them.

Yes you will need broadband and then a remotely accessable cctv system like - https://www.amazon.co.uk/H-View-Security-Recorder-...

Just a quick point, OP if you do go down this route please change the default passwords for accessing the cameras remotely (preferably to something secure). There are any number of webcams in use by consumers who have left the default passwords on and random strangers can view the webcam stream.

As above - you could go down the route of Raspberry Pi to act as a controller. 3/4G dongle might work as well if you're in a good signal area, have to way up the cost of top ups vs internet connection.

Ups not needed.

the RPi can command and control the entire network, and if power cuts, then it will just startup again when power comes back on

I suppose you can always have a program running on your end to keep checking if its "up" or not and alert you if it isnt.

For security reasons, i'd rather Grandparents RPi to reverse SSH into my system using autossh so i dont need to open up any firewall ports or expose any vulnerabilities unnecessarily and i can securely connect to the HTML interface

You'd be easier just ringing them and asking them how they're doing

If I was using this would I still need a computer/laptop at my parents?

Yes if you want to be able to access the feeds remotely; safely
hence the suggestion for a cheap disposable raspberry pi

Just get a couple of floureon pt cameras and a tp link 4g router and a £35 3 data sim with 24gb on it. The cameras are cloud connected so no need to port forward, and you can swivel them round the room. They also have 2 way audio and you can stick an sd card in them for short recording.

Ive poked around it, using it on a pi with the pi camera.
I don't have any IP cameras to really see what it can do though, so i just added the page to my faves and waited for a great time to share it and be an online hero hehe
