My galaxy S4 has been everything I've needed for the last three years, but something's got mangled inside and now it either restarts itself or says "simcard removed" every time I move it or touch it. I really don't need anything faster or more powerful, although more storage space would be handy. What would be really useful is a bigger screen, something like a 5.5" or bigger, as I mainly use it for browsing, Kindle and youtube. I don't really want to pay £600 for a new S7E or similar, a second-tier phone would be absolutely fine I think! However, I want to be sure that I can use Android Auto (maps and spotify) and I'd rather have something new than second hand. I absolutely loath buggering about with menus and settings and things, I just want it all to work reliably!

A bit of internet research suggests brands I've never heard of like the OnePlus 3T (about £400) or even the UmiDigi Z at about £200 (link here https://www.amazon.co.uk/UMIDIGI-Smartphone-Deca-c...

What, if anything, will I lose by going for one of these things instead of a high-street brand like a Samsung? Any advice or recommendations much appreciated.

Lenovo p2 all the way. £210 from three has a great screen, is plenty quick enough and has a massive battery that lasts for over 10 hours screen on time. The build is great and unlike many phones at this price its not a grey import. Delighted with mine.

Nexus 6P, 100% Vanilla Android (currently on 7.1.2) so works with all the latest technology including Android Assistant. Will also get Android 7.2 (Android O)

Might be able to find them new still or 2nd hand.

Moto G4. 5.5" 1080p display, decent phone with little OEM crap, and getting Android 7 soon I believe. £139.

Been looking at them Umidigi phones today.

The missus has a S7 Edge and the sister a S5 both starting to hate Samsung, cant convert them to Nexus or Pixel (far too much £££) they look like a good option.

My concern would be the quickness of updates, having a Nexus on the Beta channel has been really good.

Moto G4 or G4 Plus would be my recommendation unless you wanted something a little more 'premium' in which case the Nexus 6P is still an excellent phone.

I can't recommend a Oneplus 3/3T after the camera blur problems I (and many others) had and that I think they're too expensive now considering you get a phone with effectively zero after sales support.

Just been reading reviews of the Lenovo P2, ok its another 60 quid over most of the ones mentioned. Sounds like its got great battery life though, nice screen and metal case, might swing it for me.

The Moto G5 (and the plus model) is out soon,if not now.

I always sang the praises of the Vodafone smart ultra 6 and 7 but mine and my wife's have been plagued with battery problems. They feel cheap, and being honest, the camera is st.

I'm going for a Moto g5 plus very soon.

Smaller than the G4 though, and more expensive. 5" for the G5, 5.2" for the G5 Plus.

Lot of spec for the money, Xiaomi reasonably reputable amongst the Chinese brands

But you get an aluminium case and the plus has an excellent camera from what I've read.

The g4 plus is damn good value though.

I've just got a Voda Smart Turbo 7 - £49 PAYG. It looks and feels like a really prime bit of kit. Utter bargain. Android 6, without too much branded toss on it at all.

I still use one as my work phone - one of the very first non-SD/3G ones. The camera is not COMPLETELY useless in daylight, but low light it can barely even focus.
