With Zen now on Home 2000, absolutely flawless ISP. Was with AOL before, 2meg again, was ok until everyone got speed upgrades when contention hit hard.

Watch out for packet shaping on Plusnet, if your big into P2P stuff it's not for you.

I use Homechoice, 1Mb (they have faster options) via set top box which works fine with my wireless LAN, plus digital TV, video on demand (including films, £3.50 for new releases, which you get for 24 hrs and can pause, rewind etc) and quite a few programmes are recorded on their servers so you can watch up to a week later, such as top gear). Oh and free weekend / evening phone calls which I haven't checked out yet.

for £27.50 pm

Only on the Broadband Plus (£15) package apparently. If you get the Premier package (£22) then it's fine.

Just been reading up on the Waitrose BB deal.
£18.99 per month for a 2mb connection.
No setup fee (£80 if you change ISP within 12months though), and free modem. If you already have a modem and don't need theirs you save yourself 3 months of line retal (around £57). There is a cap on data of 5GB and there is a charge of £2 for every 1GB over the 5GB.
Plus all profits go to 1 of 4 charitys of your choice.
Seems like a rather good deal that i will be taking up when i move.

Email them and tell them to shut it down, then cancel the direct debit or stop sending them cheques...job done , shirley?

You've obviously never tried to cancel an AOL contract. They've just been fined $1.5M in the USA for making it near impossible to do so.

WRT to Plusnet sone changes they are making:

1. "Introduction of 'idle time-outs' for Broadband Plus and ADSL Home Surf customers only. This means that we will disconnect any sessions that are
inactive for a period of thirty minutes"

2. "Introduction of traffic prioritisation techniques to all broadband accounts."

I'm currently in the market for broadband, and am after some advice (you guys seem to know your stuff).

I have a Telewest phone line, and that seems to narrow the options. The rates on Plus.net looked great, but it requires a BT landline.

Any suggestions (apart from Telewest) for broadband that doesn't require a BT landline?

I'm on a PIPEX 2MBit/s line. This is as fast as it gets at my place in the centre of Manchester although I am only 400m from the exchange aparrently and a 24MBit ADSL2+ service is coming my way soon

Back to PIPEX though, very good indeed. No complaints so far and rarely does speed drop below the quoted 2MBit.

Try cancelling a Virgin contract non contactable departments then fits of ensue & they somehow cancel it........... well the contract but not your billing

Six months later I took them to the small claims court

Thats how difficult it is to cancel a contract

Not bad, support is rubbish (clueless teenagers) and FFS don't get the USB modem it will not share its connection for love nor money.

Been with Telewest (Cable) for over 18mts with no trouble. They keep upgrading my "speed" and also cut the price. About to be upgraded from 1mb to 4mb for no extra charge (I pay £25/month) Never needed to call support and bar the occasional crash that I sorted with a simple switch on/off no problems.

How this will continue will remain to be seen since the telewest/ntl merger.

Yup, plus.net are good. I'd disagree with the comment about helpdesk being poor - in my experience they are very good (including spending 20 minutes helping me solve an unrelated problem on my PC last weekend.) Oh, and the USB modem also has an ethernet connection which has proved utterly bombproof for me. (As has the USB connection, come to think of it, but I only use that one very occasionally for the lappie.)

I'd recommend them (and often do.)

Whoops should have updated this since I sorted my sharing problem out.

USB modem does indeed work, however I did get the work experience boy when I rang them for some help, maybe I was unlucky.

Looks like I'll be checking Plus.net out then. It really annoys me that I have to pay BT line rental when all I'll ever use it for is the ADSL! Hopefully local loop unbundling will happen round my way...

I think that if ukonline has unbindled in your area, they are a slightly better bet. (They couldn't offer me their lowest rate of £9.99/month in my area since they have't installed in my exchange yet. Check on their website ... )

In the meantime, I really would recommend plus.net. (If you tell them that zcacogp recommended you, I get a whopping 50p off my next bill!)

But for Gods sake DON'T go for the deferred activation cost as it will mean you are in a yearly contract. So if you need to cancel (like I did), you have to pay the whole year's subscription off That wasn't exactly clear when I signed up and I doubt they've listened to my complaint on this.

I've been with Freedom2Surf for as long as I can remember and their service is excellent. I'm on the 2Mb capped at 10Gb a month for £19.99. I can;t comment on their customer service, as I've never had to use it (which says alot about their product in my eyes).

yeah - i signed up to them a couple of weeks ago after moving house.

However, the activation of the ADSL line is now 10 days overdue. The online helpdesk is handy, however the support isnt great, and if your lucky you get a 5 word reply.

You can spend 30 mins on hold to get through to someone, and their not bad, but my connection still isnt up...

I went for the deffered activation - this sounds bad, although i have no plans to change in the year - but i hope after the year is up - this charge no longer applies?
