Fair do's but I wouldn't have USB-A as a requirement on a laptop nowadays.
Fair do's too but keep in mind many people do - it's still the default connection for many accessories, even brand new ones - that's why they still make and sell them.

Many modern laptops are USB-C only (not just Apple)... I typing this on a high end Dell (cost >£3500 and more than my MBP) and it has 4 USB-C ports only... which is great 99.5% of the time (occasionally it disconnects all devices for a few hundred ms ... apparently its a Dell feature biggrin).

If you need USB-A use a dock / dongle

I do need USB-A, constantly, as do many others. Better to have it built in than being forced to carry around a hub or a bunch of adapters , no?

It does amuse me how people think *their* use-case should fit to everyone elses;)

I do hate the dongles that I end up carrying around for network/HDMI/USB A etc etc

Having had HP and Asus ultra laptops I purchased a Dell XPS. What a pile of poo, quickly returned.

Ended up with a Carbon X1. Head and shoulders above all the afore mentioned

Not had a Macbook, but like Apple products although I need MS for a few legacy software programmes.

I wouldn't say "must have"... But having to carry dongles around is a poor solution when the connectors can fit in the thin form factor.

Apple first did away with these what, 8yrs ago. And yet the 30yr old connectors are still in very widespread use.

It's not my doing that people still use the old and trusty biggrin

And I don't want to have to carry extra unnecessary ste. It irritates me enough that my phone doesn't have a 3.5mm jack now!

I'm surprised nobody said it unless you/someone did but why don't you just get those things repaired if they are the only issues? Will save you a small fortune! If there is a software issue with one of them, don't remember which, just do a fresh install?

Track pad is more than software and a ball ache to get to.

HDMI may or may not be software. Finding out leaves me machine less for a bit and, more importantly, takes time to sort.

It still may be an optionsmile

If backward compatibility of ports is important then your choice of device will be limited.
I have a range of dongles that accompany me plus a USB-C to HDMI cable. If you want these older connections then you're going to be limited to certain devices that may be the best for you but they might not be best in class.
