Thought it might be a good idea if we had a thread where any useful freeware apps we came across on the web could be listed. I'll start:

AVG Anti-Virus:
<a href="http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5">http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5</a>

Ad-Aware Spyware Detector:

IrfanView Image Viewer:
<a href="www.irfanview.com">www.irfanview.com</a>

PHP Designer (IDE):
<a href="www.mpsoftware.dk/phpdesigner.php">www.mpsoftware.dk/phpdesigner.php</a>

HTML Validator:

I've alsays run avg at home, always uptodate. Was given a full copy of mcafee which found some things avg had missed.... Won't be using that again.

I've always used AVG too - my g/f had big problems with a virus on her machine that McAfee wasn't picking up, so we put the full version of AVG on ($30, I think) and that picked up all problems, auto fixed them and never had a hiccough since.

I suppose it's down to personal taste and experience, but I think AVG is one of the best ones out there.

Only othe bit of freeware I run that's not already listed is Pop-Up Stopper from panicware.com - but these days, every browser seems to come with it's own version anyway.

Usually a good idea to run a few different anti virus scanners if possible, there's are always ones the others miss and vice versa.

I just found this Website that will run a check to see if your computer will be able to run a specific game, it downloads an applet and checks your hardware and software to see if you have all you need for the game, pretty cool. Hopefully this isn't a repost. Be forewarned the "Can I run it" button does not show up in Firefox, its just to the right of the step 2 text.

DVD shrink 3.2 - sit this on top of Nero and you can make back up copies of all those easily damaged DVD's - not the quickest but perfect results every time (recommend using deep analysis, maximum smoothing and auto shutdown on completion)and don't forget to enable Nero interface....) fantastic....

There was a password recovery tool that I am sure I found from this list. If found all the passwords and usernames on my system and dumped them into a text file.

But know I can not find it.

Has it dissappears or can I not see it for the trees!

Is it possible to run more than one brand of anti-virus software at the same time. I like the sound of Nod32 but use AVG Pro at present. would Nod32 run alongside it?

It is possible to run multiple AV applications at one time. However it's not recommended you do so.
Basically both scan files as they are opened on your system so you end up with one scanner checking the output of the other, sounds good in theory until you see the massive drop in performance (that and some AV scanners really do not play well with others).
