We own quite a nice domain name, that possibly three large companies/organisations would want if it became available. (A university and a couple of big corporates). (I mention the University as the amount of people who misdirect their emails is enormous - so big that if the user doesn't match ours we shove it their mail servers).

This isn't cyber squatting, the domain was registered many years ago and is kinda related to us. However, the need for the domain isn't as great as it used to be.

Whats the best way of approaching the companies concerned to illicit whether they want to buy it? Bearing in mind that this is THE domain that they would want.

First port hands-down is sedo.co.uk

Then get marketing-savvy and approach direct.

Example of a Sedo listing...

http://www.sedo.co.uk/search/details.php4?tracked=...

They've even begun auctions as a more-recent development.
