I'm trying to copy a directory listing from within Windows Explorer as I want to make a list of the files in that folder and put the list into an excel spreadsheet. I can't copy/paste, neither can I copy using DOS -DIR command. Is there anyway I can copy the text into either Word or Excel without having to type it all in?

not sure why you can not sue the "DIR" command but if for no reason other that you can not get what you want out, try:

  • Run a command prompt window (cmd)
  • Change to folder you want listing of type
  • dir >listing.txt
  • then type start. which will run file explorer where you are
  • and open file listing.txt
  • copy and paste into what ever you want
Apologies if this is not what you want.

What is the problem with copying the DIR output from the command prompt window?

David, I haven't tried your suggestion yet but will striaght away, regarding copying from the dos prompt, I've tried the usual click and drag with mouse, but nothing is highlighted (Vista Home) so not sure how to 'select' the text.
