Problem just started today
On Desktop Windows XP O/S
My optical mouse cursor doesn't move
Have tried another mouse same problem tried using a different USB socket no change.
Rebooted several times
Restored to a known start point.
All to no avail

The only place the mouse works ok is when I start and run in safe mode.

Any ideas what may be the problem.....and how to resolve
Cheers

Can you access the Mouse Control Panel.

Start -> Control Panel -> Mouse

There is a tab for Advanced, is it showing any problems with the mouse.

Also do you have a special type of mouse that requires any drivers, maybe these aren't working and need to be re-installed.

You could also try going into device manager, and check under Mice and Other Pointing Devices for any conflicts. (Little yellow warning flags)

From the device manager screen you can also try rollback driver, or update driver to see if windows can get a more up-to-date driver for you.

Have you recently installed any hardware that could be causing conflicts?

Stuart Thanks for your prompt response
No hardware or software installed recently
Can I still get a web connection when in safe mode didnt seem so last time I tried cos I thought of looking for the driver and reinstalling
As I mentioned 2 different types/makes of mouse are having the same issues
I can probably access the Mouse in safe mode....is that ok?

I would go into safe mode, or alternatively set up the keyboard to act as the mouse so you can do it in normal mode.

You can do this by click the Start button the keyboard, then on the start-menu go to Accessibility Options, In here keep clicking tab key until you can see the tab highlighted which reads Keyboard. It will scroll through the buttons on the screen first before getting here. Once you are on the Keyboard tab push right key to go along to mouse. Again here use tab to get to the check box which reads use Mouse Keys. Once this is highlighted push space, then push return. This means your numpad will now act as the mouse.

Up to scroll up, Down to scroll down etc. It can be a bit slow, so you may want to go into mouse options and increase the scroll speed.

This should be enough temporarily to get access to the device manager while online to try and get the mouse drivers updated.

Are both mice USB? Could you try a PS2 mouse? It could be a problem with the USB sockets, do other USB devices work when plugged in?

Just a thought, especially if the second mouse was optical as well, are you using a different surface for your mouse pad? If the surface has no contrast, i.e. it is a uniform colour, the mouse doesn't realise it is being moved.
Worth giving its bottom a wipe anyway, if you'll pardon the expression, they build up a layer of grease and grime over time.

Ok an update chaps
I have connected an old mouse to thePS/2 socket and that works fine...well as fine as non optical mouse can work.
I had previously reinstalled the software for the Cordless Mouse to no avail.
So in summary both my optical mice, one cord, one wire each couldn't function no matter which USB port I used. They both worked OK in Safe mode. Just a little more info when going through the normal start up sequence the mouse/cursor moves fine until just before all the programmes are loaded in the start screen...then it shoots off to the same point on the screen and then refuses to budge
Bizarre

DOHHHHHHHH
I have just discovered what caused the above
It wasn't a software or mouse issue
I also have connected a Wacom pad, the 'pen' had fallen from its stand and was lying on the pad, consequently it was cancelling any movement I was tring to make with the mouse
Hey ho!!!
