Currently running a Dell Desktop with XP and MS Office 2007, HP 2710 All in 1.

I leave my PC on continuously. Came to start work this morning and although the computer was on I couldn't get anything on screen. I turned it off via the tower switch and when turning back on it would start booting for a couple of seconds then stop and just show a cursor flashing in the top left hand corner of the screen.

Switched off again and pulled the 3 USB connections; Tom Tom, printer and ADSL line. Switched on again and it booted up. Towards the end of the boot it came up up with a serious error message detailing 2 "temp" problems. Closed it down via the Start menu.

On reconnection of the USB's for printer and ADSL again it would not boot up but just showed the cursor flashing. Switched of again and pulled the printer USB connection. Switched on again and it booted up fine.

So by process of illimination it appears the printer is having a bad hair day/blonde moment so what are the recomnedations.

Junk the printer and buy a new one.

Reload the HP software.

Stamp my feet and kick the cat.

You could reload the software as when the printer is connected to the printer it is obviously running a background programe which could have a faulty file in it or a corrupt file. Make sure you deleate every file and folder from your pc which is part of the hp printer and try again.

Or the last idea of yours sounded suffice

If having the printer connected is stopping it from even getting to the POST (power on self test) routines, then I'd say it is a hardware problem rather than a software one surely?

If you got it as a package from Dell and it is still under warranty, they may just send you a new printer and tell you to scrap the old one.

Thanks guys.

No chance of warranty claim as the PC is 4 years old and the HP was bought sometime later. I'll give the delete/reinstall of everything HP a bash and if that doesn't work then it's off to buy a new all in one jobby.

Not having any affinity with our feline freinds, I don't actually have one to kick. If I did, it would not recover.

Now stop interrupting and let me get back to loading my HP software.wink
