DVD-R dual layer - expensive/rare?

Just paid £25 for an internal DVD-DL burner as I need to make some large back-ups. Seems however that finding dual/double layer media in the shops is a difficult or expensive task. Went to currys-digital, £24.99 for 10 disks!, went to Staples and the guy said they stopped selling them 4-5 months ago. Other places simply had none in stock or for sale. Any idea why? It looks like nobody is bothered about the DVD-DL media compared to standard DVD-/+R.
