Internet explorer problem

I keep having a problem whereby IE locks up and will not close normally. It then takes a control/alt/delete and about 10 clicks of the "programme not responing" box before it finally disappears. I did switch from AVG to Avast a couple of months ago which could be the cause I guess?

If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful. Thanks.

Are you using IE6 or 7? Any more clues - it's a bit vague at the moment ...

Sorry IE7.

It literally freezes up and will not close in the normal way.

All websites or specific one(s)?
Does "My Computer" behave normally? If so, type a web address in the address bar and try that ...
