Updated my Norton InternetSecurity 2007 to the 2008 version (I know, I know, I've been stupid) and now need help.

System is a ASUS A7N8X motherboard with 1Mb RAM fitted with 2 x 250GB SATA drives (C & F), CD-ROM writer (drive E) and DVD-writer (drive D).

Since the Norton update computer blue screens on start-up and has to be started using 'last known working configuration' or whatever the correct wording is. Windows then loads and finds an unspecified new item of hardware but can't find the driver for it. It also reloads the driver for the Microsoft USB mouse that then works fine.

The following no longer works:
mother-board in-built sound - have reloaded driver but no difference.
USB memory sticks not seen but USB printer works OK.
Second SATA drive (drive F) not seen by Windows XP (SP2) but seen by PC on start-up. Shows in Windows's Disk Management but no drive letter assigned. Attempting to assign a drive letter brings up the error message 'Volume not enabled - restart computer to enable volume'. However, re-starting PC does not enable the volume.

In Device Manager there is now:
? Other devices
? Unknown device
and
Storage Devices
! Generic volume
! Generic volume

Most urgent problem is second hard disk not accessible, although I could connect to my brother's PC if I want any data off it.

I can hibernate (rather than switch-off) the PC and it then re-starts without the blue screening, but above problems still present.

All ideas on how to rectify any of the above problems gratefully received. Or suggestions of other forums that may be able to help.

Try using system restore to go back to before you changed anything - otherwise things are going to be difficult frown

Thanks for the suggestion, Buggalugs.

Unfortunately still get blue screen and then WinXP states that it can't restore to any of the restore points that I have tried, and I tried all for the 5 days before the upgrade to Norton happended (10/01/08).

On startup WinXP also displays an error message regarding 'Generic Host process for Win32 Services'. Any idea what this does?

Well I found out what 'Generic Host process for Win32 Services' is and the error is caused by one of Microsoft's own Auto' Updates! There is a fix on their site but it didn't work in my case - probably because I have to use 'last known good configuration' in order to boot in to WinXP.

Still have the original fault though.
