Evening all

Basically, my Norton Anti virus subsricption has just ended, and i'm lothe the renew it if i can get something just as good for free.

So, can anybody point me in the direction of a good anti virus/firewall that i don't have to pay for, and most importantly of all is easy to setup? I'm really not good with software, and i have a habit of arsing up installations by changing the settings. I'm after something simple that will do the job with the minimum of input from me (as i'll just end up breaking it)

Cheers!!

AVG Free / Avast / Clamwin.

I use avast on all machines. Provided you have a decent router and are careful what you do online, you should be OK

I've just loaded AVG freebie on my old laptop that was too underspec'd to run Mcafee and it seems OK although it seems to be fairly obsesses about needing to be restarted!

You need to change the settings then - open control centre, click on update manager, then click properties, change it to 'if computer restart is required...complete at next restart'

ran avg for years and then found out it missed stuff frown

running nod32 from eset who also do a numpty proof all in one, tested for me by a numpty friend who reckoned it way better than norton and takes up less memory

btw the norton removal tool does not remove norton info from registry, full format seems to clear it apparently smile

Thanks for that, I'll have a look at the settings. Restarting the 9 year old lappy takes a while! I usually just say no, but then the AVG icon is greyed out so I was bothered that it wasn't running properly.

Sadly there doesn't seem to be an update manager on the freebie version confused

Another vote for nod32 here - not free, but seems to have worked better than most when I've installed it for clients.
