Mostly for Cyberface, although anyone else with any knowledge of it, please contribute!
Further to me saying I would get around to d/loading it, I just did.
Installed and sorted an account and that sort of thing. Anyhoo, it's brought up the Manager and it just says 'Downloading work from the server' I assume this is a good thing?
Also, cyberface, what have you set yours to use system wise?
I've just told it to thrash away (I'll leave it on tomorrow and see what it does smile) but it'll be interesting to see how my anaemic system compares! hehe
Be interesting to see how cool it is by the end of the day too!

I think it downloads a wadge (technical term) of data for your PC to crunch then it will upload your results and send another lot down....

I would recommend 'Folding' rather than SETI.

The current scientific thinking behind SETI is that it is a waste of resources as it has just had its funding stopped by the US. The thinking is that using radio wave to transmit data on Earth is already being phased out. According to that, it would make sense that another 'alien' world even *if* they use radio waves to communicate, their civilisation, will only do it for a similar time as ours - around 100 years.

So, even if there are other worlds millions of light years away, it would be a complete fluke and only a tiny chance that we would be listening at just the right time to overhear their communications. If a civilisation lasts a billion years, then 100 in that isnt much. Further to that, if the world is 100 million light years away, this means that even if we do hear something, it was transmitted 100 million years ago, so that civilisation will be dead or completely evolved by now anyway, and certainly by the time we try to respond, our message will take 100 million years to get back...

Even if we take all of those reasons not to and throw them out the window, we are assuming that our 'universal advertisement' to impossibly evolved extra-terrestrial beings will have a nice outcome. By all intents and purposes, they will be evolved so far above us that they will look onto us as we do to a mouse or even an ant and our fertile planet will be much more useful with us eradicated.

On the other hand, if you participate in Folding, you are actually helping the human race evolve quicker to ensure that the above does not happen!

Totally agree with going for Folding instead. Naff all has (and will) come from SETI, but F@H has attainable targets which are beneficial to the human race.

I'll have a look into that then smile
It's working now anyway, left it on today, 100% core loading across both cores, so be interested to see the temps when i get back!
