Which ISP are you with? - many of them offer online tools to knock up simple sites.

Other than that, you could try MS Frontpage, which lets you set one up as if it were a normal 'Word' type document (rather than having to learn HTML) - then all you'd need is your ISP settings to upload it.

Other than that, it's not really something that can be covered in a few forum posts....

I set mine up using Frontpage, teaching myself with the aid of a Frontpage Step by Step book.

http://www.88qv.com if you want a look.

It's simple and serves my purpose.

360 Detailing - Flash sites are a massive internet faux pas. Especially when its flash not used properly. Flash is great for making animations, or games, but for a full site its torturous.

And it doesn't work in Safari - but instead forces any user to a page which claims that a download of IE or Firefox is required - complete bollox if the site is standards compliant (http://w3.org/ for the relevant standards and checking tools everyone)

Everything you need to know. Probably. This site got me started way back in the mid 1990's.

You must be using an old version of Safari / OSX, as it works perfectly well here on OSX 10.5.2 and Safari 3.0.4.

Totally depends what you want the site for. If it's a personal site for people to look at stuff you will manage it yourself. If you want something to launch a business, pay the premium.

I got free hosting with Freevirtual servers, and a Dutch friend made the site for me in exchange for Galaxy chocolate (they don't have it in Holland, much to her dismay).

Nice and simple, create your own from a list of templates (Americanized) and add your own text.

Did mine and its ok, google ranking is a bit crappy as you cannot change the page names etc but it does a job.

I use www.freewebs.com

very easy and best of all free.

Once you are happy with the design .. and there are loads of templates then you can for a very moderate sum have the google adds removed.

The only downside of freewebs is there can be some outage as they are continually improving the service and features.

the website in my profile used freewebs.

one of its new good features is that even with a free created website you can have a unique url.. using a yoursite.webs.com format

If you have no html knowledge, a quick way to set up a site is Weebly. Just drag and drop the elements you want on your page.

If you want a nice domain name "www.something.com" then buy one for about £3-8 and you can redirect your weebly site to it smile

wrote/coded mine from scratch with Dreamweaver

imagine building a small car after standing on the hard-shoulder for while, watching the traffic, then walking into a branch of Unipart with a chequebook.

love a challenge me.

i did write a site in 1994 using only HTML , before most of you lot even had an email address, but I got kicked off the university server for "operational policy violations"

I remember the day Netscape was floated on the US stock market and the price went up about 1000% in 24 hours. Could have made millions on that, such an obvious investment at the time. Then banner ads, java, IE, flash, etc etc. What a journey
