this is going to sound like i have been looking at rude websites or something but..

...does a wireless router store information or is it merely a 'conduit' for the information. i am sure mine is getting slower and slower and i wondered if this was the reason..??? or am i just getting more and more impatient?!

it stores a DNS cache but that only lasts 10mins i think. there will also be a routing table it builds up from your browsing, no idea how long that lasts but i think power cycling the router clears it.

Is it secure? Neighbours nicking your wireless to download stuff would slow it down..

The DNS Cache certainly won't slow anything down (and the length depends on the records and the TTL).
The routing table won't change (it'll probably just have a default gateway, i.e. 1 route other than the local ones).

I'd consider:

1) Look at the speed you're getting from your line. This could have degraded if you've changed the phones in the house (maybe length of cable, number of phone extensions, filters etc).

2) Consider upgrading the firmware. There's probably much later versions available now.
