Hi all,

I’m looking for something like a tablet format pc but in the eee price bracket. It can be an off the shelf product or a combination of products combined with in a custom enclosure does any body know of any anything or can you point me in the right direction. Win CE based devices don’t seem to have the grunt.

ps maby a helpful mod will change the title "Tablet / UMPC" as I have just had a coppy past error

What are you looking to do with it?

We do a number of touchscreen PCs for automation purposes, they are small form factor but not in the eee price bracket, as far as I am aware there is nothing down that low.

Samsung Q1 is about as low as it goes at the minute.

Something like the Viewsonic V212 perhaps?

Very very nice panel, used by Crestron as an OEM product for their automation system.

Hi,

I’m struggling to find specks on how much grunt they have I guess I am looking for something in the region of a p3 800 ball park

As with most things I really need to run some bench marks on the device to know for sure

It looks like the N800 might not be powerful enough for you, then:

Benchmark Nokia N800 P2 266 P2 450mhz
MEMORY INDEX 0.808 1.199 1.792
INTEGER INDEX 1.185 0.968 1.559
FLOATING-POINT INDEX 0.908 1.904 2.612

N800 won't have the power. It won't even run OpenOffice.

You might pick up a cheap tablet on eBay, but worth pointing out that most Tablet PCs have an active digitiser. Which works off a special pen, it won't work with your finger.

s/h Samsung Q1 or Asus R2H are probably about as cheap as a Windows UMPC gets at the moment ...

However ! A large number of Intel/Linux based Mobile Internet Devices are about to hit later in the year. Although if they ever make it here is another question. Might be worth hanging on ?

Hi there,
Do you have any links to possible devices? As I have looked about but most of the devices I can find are not in the tablet from factor I have no problem with there being a key board but the screen really needs to fold round so it can be used as a tablet. the only thing that I have found so far that meats my requirements is the One Laptop Per Child however I don’t know if the processor in that is up to the job.

Is it just the display you need, or does it need a touch screen ?

Hi,

Touch screen as well. The device is to be used in an environment where a key board is inappropriate having said that if you can think of a combination of products we can add a touch screen. i.e. if you know of a small embedded pc we can add a touch screen, battery and associated electronics. Then package the product.

Plotloss is the person to speak to about that I think.

For a windows POV you could go for.

Samsung Q1.

The early Q1s didn't have the little (and useless) keyboard. Running XP they are fairly nippy.

This seller has some late model Flybooks: http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZwidgetuk

You never know you might get lucky on bidding, one went for £250ish according to this guys history. I found it while looking for batteries for the one I'm buying.

My nice fast P4 doesn't like running OpenOffice either, as it seems to be hobbled by being written in Java (or just badly written?)

(You're right about the N800, BTW.)

But they won't be a touchscreen. You will need a pen.

Wait a month or so for the EEE PC 900 which has a touch screen. If you look on Google Shopping for it a few places are pre-ordering for £320 or so.
