can you still buy it without registering for a contract in store. I know the procedure was buy in store and choose a contract via itunes. I guess alot of people have abused this and no taken up contracts, so I was wondering if they have cracked down?

read somewhere that there are no iphones for sale in the uk from legal sources as apple want everyone to have the new and much more costly to run 3g version

Yeah think they're sold out in the UK now awaiting the new 3G version.

that said I have an 8Gb hardly unused, unlocked iPhone that I no longer need.... (switched back to my BB)

Oh really, looks like I've missed the boat. The 8Gb would be perfect as I'm not interested in the 3g mobile web stuff.

Some Apple stores might have a few left, I understand.

However, I'd still recommend that you wait - even if you're not bothered about the 3G iPhone, it's quite possible that:

a) other aspects of the 3G iPhone will attract you (GPS? Better camera? Videos? Other stuff?)

b) upon release of the 3G model, the 2G model could be found a lot more cheaply - either old stock, or due to Apple releasing it as a lower-end model, which has been rumoured.

If you can find one (doubtful), then yes, you can take it home, no contract signed and unlock it, you only take up a contract for the phone part when you register it inside of iTunes (so don't do it)
