Go to John Lewis and a listen to the Altec Lansing FX6021
then buy the from dabs..

I use these. May push the budget a little (125gbp) but they are awesome. I even got a second set just to use with a squeezebox in a another room.

I use a pair of Yamaha active monitors - they blow everything else out of the water and don't require a separate amp. ( http://www.gear4music.com/Studio_Monitors/Yamaha/Y... )
There are loads of actives available at all price points - the good ones are designed to sit on a desk.
These are much cheaper ( http://www.gear4music.com/Studio_Monitors/Behringe... ).

Creative Gigaworks T20. About £45 off amazon, and sound excellent for their size. Only annoyance is the very bright blue LED on the front, easily fixed with a little blob of blu-tac.

I bought a pair of these for my Lad's PC, very impressed with them for what they are.http://www.trustedreviews.com/multimedia/review/20...
I use a pair of Alesis Studio 1 Mk2's on mine.
As a slightly off beat suggestion, how about one of these -

And whatever speakers you care to plug in to it?

Try finding a PC with an ISA slot in it these days!http://www.marchandelec.com/pm48.html

Well I could, quite easily! dozens of them for the taking downstairs at work here, for starters.
I nearly pointed out that it was ISA and thus not likely to fit anything even remotely modern, but it occured to me that anyone who found the idea interesting would note that 1- they 'say' pci versions coming soon(I call BS, given the date they posted that), and 2- 5 minutes with a file, job done; no connectors on the slot, t'is purely for location.
