Google is releasing an open source browser called Google Chrome which it promises will be small, fast and stable.
Available for download shortly, the tabbed browser is explained in a 38 page comic by Scott McCloud. The comic explains that browsers are now very different from when first introduced - they are used for running web applications rather than just rendering pages.
Tabs will be central to Chrome and will be moveable from window to window.
The browser will be multi-threaded - so separate tabs will run as separate processes.*
The URL window will include autocomplete - but only to pages you've actually typed into the address bar before and not to the specific page. Opening a new window will show you the nine pages you visit most often, and the four sites you search on most often, rather than a home page.
Chrome will have an incognito porn mode - a window where none of your browsing history is recorded and cookies are deleted when the window is shut.
To stop malware processes are sandboxed - they cannot write files to your hard drive or read your documents. Chrome will get updates of phishing sites and malware attacks so browsers will get a warning if they go to a flagged site.
Chrome will include a task manager for each tab so you can see what resources are being used by individual pages.
The development team thanked Mozilla and Web Kit for their contribution.
The Windows version launches in 100 countries today, and Mac and Linux versions will follow soon.

....... there'll be a data-mining element I'm sure.
But to be fair most/all of Google stuff does this and I suspect so do a loot of other websites etc.I like Googles sense of humour. The incognito information page says this:
"Going incognito doesn't affect the behaviour of other people, servers or software.
Be wary of:
Websites that collect or share information about you
Internet service providers or employers that track the pages that you visit
Malicious software that tracks your keystrokes in exchange for free smileys
Surveillance by secret agents
People standing behind you"
Secret agents and people standing behind you -
This post is brought to you via Google Chrome !

Seems stable, and very fast for some sites (BBC) but slow for others (Flickr). Not sure about the colour scheme and I can't yet see how to change it.

...just look "basic" looking for me ...
That's one thing I really like about it.Seems fast to me, is that because it's basic?
Not noticed a speed difference between different websites - certainly loaded BBC a lot quicker than FF on my desktop running Ubuntu.
Just to clarify I've installed Chrome on laptop running XP.
I guess that time will tell just how good it is.
Are you guys who don't like it on XP or Vista? It looks alright on my Vista machine, very uncluttered. Standard Vista rounded corneres and translucency of course.
It's doing some weird things with some page layouts though which I hope they sort out. I don't want to have to test for yet another set of rendering quirks in a new browser!

It's actually a bit better than I thought, lots of quite nice little features, and it does seem pretty fast as well. I'm looking forward to seeing the Mac version - had to switch to Vista to use it.
I'm not convinced I'll be replacing Firefox just yet, as I couldn't be without Firebug, but I'll be keeping this installed as well.
