looking at it, that seems very obvious from the way in which the google toolbar works, type in a few characters and its obviously feeding/replying but I'll take a look at other fields.

Also will take another look at the vm machine too as I was noticing call homes from the mandriva and xp sessions. Mandriva was running firefox so expected but XP wasn't. XP did have Chrome removed so I wonder if something lasting has been left (oh for a copy of install sheild to see what changes the little tinkerers have made!)

Heres Googles take on the Omnibox (Omnispy):

google said:
Google Chrome Omnibox Keylogger

Did you know that Google Chrome could be conceived as keylogging your data? Well it could be, but the good news it isn't as bad as it sounds. It's not recording all your keystrokes, it doesn't record all the time and it only runs in Chrome.

How it works is like this. When you begin typing a search term into the Chrome Omnibox it sends the information you have entered up to the Google server where it uses its search technology to generate a set of results based on the supplied data. These results are then pushed back down to the Chrome Browser where they are displayed to the end user below the Omnibox in a drop down list style. This concept is called auto suggest.

The reason the term keylogging has been used is that it turns out the keypress (by the end user) triggers the send action to the Google server and therefore it makes for news if we scare people and say its a keylogger smile.

I presume that the keylogging is only from the omnibox in Chrome not from other form fields? Does it do the same thing in 'incognito' mode? I don't mind it for searches, as it makes sense to gather data on what people are searching for, but do take issue with recording everything typed in.

monitor the traffic and take a look. We noticed after the recent update to chrome the https (non incognito mode) no longer appears to index the text but not really looked at it long enough on the new version
