  • aSmart HUD + - three versions available. Very smart (slightly better looking than iHUDlite) with custom colors to match your cars dash, speed trap alarms, compass all in a HUD display. Night only due to lack of true projection. 59p
  • CamerAlert - GPS based speed camera alert app that also measures your average speed through SPECS areas. The best 59p I ever spent.
  • Driving Test Theory
  • Dynolicious - Great app for measuring your cars performance pricey at over seven quid though!
  • g-tac free (similar to Dynolicious, but free)
  • GloveBox - App for motorists to store all your vehicle details with built in reminders for Insurance Due, MOT Date, Breakdown cover etc.... Tyre Pressures / Sizes, Oil Grade, Radio Code and loads more - Universal App
  • Harry's LapTimer. Lap timer with setable start/stop, plots course etc. Free and paid for versions.
  • How Many Left – the iPhone variant of the website www.howmanyleft.co.uk showing how many vehicles are SORNed, taxed etc per year added 30/1/12
  • iHUDlite - Fancy a heads-up display on the windscreen at night ? (free)

  • MCN Motorcycle Logger - Fantastic app for tracking your route, and all the stats of your ride. Sounds expensive, but after the first use I was happy with the £4.99 price.
  • NavFree - the first proper free Sat Nav app, including full UK mapping stored locally on the phone rather than downloading on the fly (which is unreliable) as other free sat nav apps do. Its no TomTom but ideal for the occasional user.
  • Navigon - brilliant turn by turn nav app.
  • PocketDyno - Measure your cars performance
  • Road Trip Lite - Monitor the cost per mile and usage of your car
  • Road Trip - Full version of the above includes Maintenence tab - well worth it! Export data to Excel too.
  • Roadee - Full Sat-Nsv for 59p
  • Speed - A free GPS speedo - no longer free but £0.59
  • scobbler - unsure of spelling bit its free satnav
  • TomTom - Sat-Nav (UK&Ireland £59.99) - Now £42.99 as is Western Europe which is the same app but with more storage taken up (1.8Gb rather than ~400Mb for UK/Ireland)

  • Accuweather - Very good maps and up to date weather videos plus alerts and stuff. FREE.
  • AroundMe (uses gps to find things close by)
  • BA Flights - Live updates on BA flights
  • Citymapper - Great app for getting around London using public transport
  • Every Trail - Free GPS tracking app, uploads routes to the internet. See more here
  • FlightTrack (Not as good as MyRail, but pretty useful for flight times).

  • XC Train Search - An excellent free version of the National Rail train tracker app - even tells you platforms your trains are on before they're on the board at the station!
  • Tube Map - London Underground
  • TubeStatus - Live updates on the status of the London Underground
  • UrbanKite - find anything local to you, very extensive (free).

Utilities


  • 0870 - put in an 08** number and this searches and finds a local number for it (free).
  • Aircam - Lite version allows remote viewing of webcam on iPhone. Full version allows it over internet. If you get the software that goes with it, (don't need the app), you can use motion detection on isight, or webcam to record. handy little gizmo.
  • Atomic Browser free Lite and paid version. Tabbed browsing.
  • Awesome Note - Brilliant notes / personal organiser app. Can create sub folders that are optionally password protected, and chose different display types (calendar, notes, to do list etc), all with local alarms that dont need the app running / rely on push notifications. There's also a free version with limited functionality.
  • Battery Doctor Pro - Increases battery life. Saved Republik the cost of a new battery from Apple.
  • BT SmartTalk - use wifi to make calls. Good for roaming abroad
  • Carpenter - Useful 'Level' Tools
  • ChangingRoom - helps co-ordinate outfits when out shopping.
  • Clinometer. Excellent tool for setting angles, camber etc.
  • Darkslide - the best Flickr app
  • Decibel - 'oMeter (As used by the Top Gear boys in the tunnel
  • Deepfish - allows searching of email message contents via IMAP4 (so Gmail, exchange etc) on the server. iOS won't allow contents searching, only title. 31/3/2011
  • DimConvert - Convert inches to mm and it understand fractions. Great for speaking to old people
  • Dropbox - Share any files between PC & iPhone, 2GB free online storage.
  • Evernote- cross platform notes storage and OCR or pictures/handwriting etc

  • GB Locate - Gives OS Grid ref from built in GPS
  • Keynote Remote - If you're a Mac user and give presentations.

  • Remote - Control iTunes over your WiFi connection
  • Spendometer - Keep track of what you spend to see where your money goes
  • Shazam - Can't quite place a song you can hear over a tannoy etc? Shazam will tell you what it is and where to get it
  • Tap2Call - Use an icon on the home screen to call, text or mail someone
  • Text Template - This is a very handy little app, free too. It's called MT from square bracket software.
  • Things - Todo list
  • ToDo - To Do List that you hand scribe the Items into a window which then forms a list. (Somehow it is quicker and easier than typing and more aesthetically pleasing
  • Todo by Appigo - Todo list that syncs with browser based tool as well 31/3/2011
  • TV Plus - TV listing and the ability to send remote record to you SKY box
  • TV Catch Up - Not an ap but save iphone.tvcatchup.com on your home screen to watch LIVE TV. Im currently sat here watching the FA Cup Semi on iphone ITV1.

  • 123people - An iPhone version of the popular people search engine, 123people.com. It's free too!
  • AirMe (take photos, and immediately upload them to sites like Flickr/Facebook)
  • Airvideo - Stream videos from PC/Mac to ipod/iphone/ipad...
  • Ebay - a superior interface for using Ebay, rather than via the standard browser
  • Echofon Pro - previously known as Twwitterfon: premium Twitter APP with multi account access, geotags, media upload, custom themes and more.
  • Facebook - Connects to your Facebook account, with a decent amount of functionality.
  • Friendz - See who of your xBox Live Friends are Online and what they are playing. (You can Message also)
  • Fring - Get your Skype, MSN, Yahoo! chat on your iPhone. Works over 3G and WiFi.
  • iMediaShare - Streams Photos Videos Youtube etc through an Xbox 360 or PS3 - Free with ads or £2.99 for full - added 22052013

  • Twitterfon Pro - (now known as Echofon Pro) this premium Twitter APP allows multiple accounts and landscape mode. Includes Geo Location for location tagging and an embeded TwitPic option to attach pictures to your tweets!

  • TwitVid - shoot a video on your 3GS and tweet it!
  • TweetDeck - another (free) Twitter app. Syncs with Tweetdeck on your desktop so you don't read the same tweets twice
  • VIBER - Free app, free calls over the Internet ( to other Viber users ) similar to Skype but uses numbers from your phone contacts. I think its new out so time will tell.Works over wifi or 3G.

  • Arsenal - Very Informative and fairly quickly Updated. Short Video Highlights from previous Games as well as Interviews. A mini Version of the Full Site
  • BBC News app - BBC finally enters the 21st Century with a free news app, live BBC news TV. iPlayer and BBC Sports apps coming later.
  • Bloomberg - Track shares and currency markes, news too.
  • Couch to 5k -training guide to get you running 5k in 9 weeks, includes warm up/cool down session and stretching exercises
  • Currency (Easy to use currency converter - almost as depressing as Road Trip at the moment).

Entertainment


  • BBC iPlayer - a must have (not strictly an app but suggesting creating a bookmark on the home screen)
  • F-Stream - Stream radio over 3G or WiFi (I have Radio 4, BBC R2 & 5 Live steams set up)
  • GeoCaching - Really nice App with descriptions of locations and information on Caches throughout the Country as well as pictures, hints and so on
  • iPeng - if you have a Squeezebox, iPeng (or one of the other controllers) is a must.
  • Jamie Oliver (20 Minute Meals) - Handy little Cook Book with full Recipes and Instructions
  • Last.fm - this is very good... you can use Last.fm over 3g too! and it works very well
  • OrbLive Now on the App store, you can stream videos, music and even Live TV from your PC (TV card) direct to your iPhone - http://www.orb.com/en/orblive.
  • RadioBox - Radio channels, UK, Europe & World listed.
  • Truveo Video - multi video channel search app (free).
  • TuneIn Radio - stream 30,000 radio stations from around the world, works with WMA, Real and MP3 streams so BBC, TotalRock etc all work

Games


  • Angry birds Highly addictive. The full game is only 59p !
  • Aqua Moto - a very fun 'wave race' game.
  • Asphalt 4 - You're on PH, so you obviously like cars, average graphics / average fun.
  • Assassin's Creed - Depth of controls and beautiful visuals
  • Backbreaker - NFL / American Football game. Very simple pick up and play. Addictive.
  • Bankshot - Swipe the ball to bounce of the wall no more than three times to land in the target area. Oh how this wastes those 'waiting for the missus moments'
  • Bejewelled 2 - addictive as hell game that is available for just about any format
  • Bloons Lite - OK so for 59p I did get full version
  • Brain Challenge - This is actually rather good and quite addictive.
  • Broken Sword - BUY THIS NOW. A masterpiece of a game; verging on art. Relive the original with updated graphics. Read the reviews on the APP store if you're in any doubt.
  • Brothers in Arms (WW2 shooter)
  • bwin Poker Clock - Great for all those poker players who need a decent poker clock. Top app and it's free!
  • Cat Physics- Not really sure why cats get involved here, but another very addictive puzzle game, get the ball from one cat to the other around various obstacles using the shortest path possible to score maximum stars.
  • Canabalt - Great soundtrack as you dash across roof top buildings in a little pixel peril stage tapping the screen to leap gaps
  • Chain Reaction - Tap the screen once and see how many tiny balls can react
  • Crack Code (similar to the old Mastermind game)
  • Crash Kart - Crash Bandicoot in Go-Karts!
  • Crayon Physics
  • Cut the Rope - As hard as this is to believe...it's as addictive as Angry Birds, and the challenges are simply great, cut rope, float in bubbles, swing etc...very good.
  • Doodle God - addictive puzzler playing with elements
  • Draughts
  • F.A.S.T. - a very slick and realistic fighter jet game.
  • Ferrari GT - basically the same as Asphalt but slightly better graphics and nice intro!
  • Flick Kick Rugby - Finger flicking penalty / conversion taking fun.
  • Flight Control/ Harbor Master- An addictive novelty type game.
  • Fling - Knock fluffy balls towards each other and clear the screen. Looks great and is as addictive as Angry Birds or Cut the rope.
  • FSS Hockey
  • Fragger - Puzzle game along the same lines as Angry Birds (and just as addictive), throwing grenades over/under/around various obstacles to blow up terrorists - Added 13/09/10
  • Galcon Labs - brilliantly simple online multi-player strategy game
  • Grand Theft Auto: China Town Wars. £5.99 and absolutely amazing. Best game for the iPhone by miles
  • Jewel Quest II - Stupid storyline, very addictive game play however.
  • Labyrinth - Tilt the iPhone to maneuver the ball through a maze
  • Let's Golf - Similar to 'Everybody's Gold' on the Playstation
  • Metal Gear Solid 'Touch' - amazing graphics and characters.
  • Monkey Island - As engaging and puzzling as the Playstation Version
  • Monopoly is good - you get to shake the phone to roll the dice (new rules though!)
  • Morocco reversi (free)
  • Moron test - Very frustrating but very addictive quiz.
  • Myst - properly engrossing 1st person adventure game
  • Need For Speed Underground - possibly the best driving game. The story line is cliche but the real cars, tuning and driving dynamics such as flick drifts make for a great experience.
  • Nick Chase - Detective 'click and find' puzzler
  • Noughts and Crosses
  • Pacman lite
  • Paper Toss/ Paper Toss World - Flick the ball of paper into the bin across continents
  • Platinum Sudoku - Brilliant sudoku game. Worth every penny and infuriatingly addictive!!!
  • Pocket God - utterly stupid but amusing for the cost of a mars bar.
  • Real Football 2009 (very similar physics to Pro Evo) not as good as the other footy game on APP store though; X2 Football.
  • Real Racing - sort out the sensitivity in the options menu and it's as close to Gran Turismo as you will get. Includes world leaderboard via 'sync' making this 'Xbox Live' like in some respects.
  • Rolando is possibly the best game for the iPhone - very very good
  • Solebon Solitaire (pay)
  • Sonic - a classic game from Sega; an exact port of the lil blue hedgehog from the Megadrive
  • Stich Cricket - highly addictive cricket game
  • Stick Wars
  • Stoneloops Of Jurassica
  • Stones Lite
  • Supercross - great motoX game (there is a free demo)
  • Tap Tap Revenge 2 - Free, extremely addictive, great online gaming, kinda like Guitar Hero for your fingers!
  • Terminator Salvation - incredible game and shows off the power of the 3GS
  • Texas Hold'em - Really well written and entertaining poker game. I had never played poker before I bought this app.
  • Tiger Woods PGA Tour - The best 'i-Golf' game I've found.
  • Touch 4 (connect 4)
  • Topple
  • Toybot Diaries - an excellent platformer, though I've only played the first one all the way through yet.
  • Trace
  • Trivial Pursuit - amazing fun, use wifi to connect and play others or play on your own.
  • Unblock Me - Puzzle game.
  • Virtual Pool - there is a 'Lite' version. Worth buying the full game; quite addictive!
  • Where's Wally - If you remember the Childhood books this is near identical but with animations and fits in your pocket
  • Wild West Pinball
  • Worms - it's out now and it is very very very slick.
  • Yahtzee Adventures - quite addictive. Try scoring just 5 on Yahtzee!
  • X2 Football - the best footie game on the iPhone bar none; amazing dynamics, commentary, replays and save replay options. Brilliant.
  • X-Plane

Misc


  • Activity Farm - Game for toddlers, keep them entertained as they press on farm animals and it plays a sound
  • Bab Bab - Turns the iPhone into a rattle (until the little blighters work out the Menu Button wink )
  • Beer Goggles
  • BubbleWrap - So satisfying!
  • Carling virtual pint thing is cool in a useless sort of way
  • Dual Level Lite - it's a spirit level. I keep my I-phone in the tool box and this software made it an almost useful gadget.
  • Gym Buddy - click. "Gym Buddy is the best-looking, most powerful and most versatile workout log on any platform!"
  • italk - turns the iphone into a sound recorder
  • Live Cams - view and take control of public cameras all over the world; pan & zoom - only streams properly when using WiFi - a very useless but addcitive APP - I believe you can add your home webcam or security camera to your private settings so that you can view your home on your iPhone wherever you are.
  • Koi Pond - Get this if you have kids. It keeps them quiet for minutes.
  • Lightsaber (say no more!)
  • Mixmeister - allows you to scratch over tunes in itunes. good fun
  • Mood Pad - 'Heat' sensitive swipe board
  • Ocarina - This is a cool way to show off your new iPhone.
  • Pizza Hut - Allows you to order direct from your iPod/iPhone (May just be US though) *
  • Whooppee Cushion
  • Guitar Toolkit - Gives you a tuner, scales charts, chord boxes (incl reverse lookup/finder) with support for custom tunings. Also supports the Bass guitar. This was the first app I bought. About £5.

iPhotography


  • AutoStitch - make panoramas
  • BestCamera - decent filters and also does photosharing very well
  • CameraBag - preset filters, including Polaroid-a-like, 1970s, and a great Holga filter
  • Format126 - free, LOFI style effects
  • Hipstamatic - processes shots in-phone with various cool "aged" effects
  • TiltShiftGen - for that trendy "ooo it looks like ickle models" look
  • PhotoGene - crop, Straighten, Add Borders
  • Photofx - expensive, but a lot of filters from Tiffen. Watch out that you have to purchase two additional sets (in app) if you want the lot.
  • Photosynth - Free app from Microsoft that stitches a series of photos into a panorama
  • Pro HDR - OK, so not Photmatix, but merges two photos of differing exposures rather well
  • ReelMoments - timelapse video in your iPhone (battery hungry, but much fun!) 09/05/2011
  • ShakeItPhoto - Take pictures in a Polaroid stylee
  • PSMobile - Adobe Photoshop (Elements) for the iPhone. Very good, simple, and free.

Music


  • BeatMaker - pricey, but powerful sequencer that can import samples from Noise.io
  • Noise.io - also pricey, but amazingly powerful mono synth (like a Kaosillator). Control loops with touch and two way tilt.
  • iDaft - a Sound Board of the songs Harder, Faster and TechnologicLink
  • Cue Play DJ - certainly the best DJ app on the iPhone, a pocket version of Traktor and only £6!
