Got home from work today to find windows 7 waiting for me (pre ordered from PC world)

2hrs later im all set up with all my programs and docs transfers, so far im impressed it looks very much like vista but runs much quicker even with the aero enabled on my 2 year old laptop.

Anyone else installed it?

The only problem i had was getting the correct display driver working, works now and looks smart smile

Quick question, the Europe version was supposed to be a fresh install of W7 on top of Vista rather than an upgrade. Is that still the case, the reason being I didn't see anything of a 'E' marked on the box (which came from Ireland) and have only seen reference to a Vista tool on the MS website which makes the transition easier.

Did you need to do the whole Disaster Recovery - fresh install - reinstall all programs and settings deal that was suggested? Sounds like your upagrade was relatively pain free.

Muppet.

Back to Windows 7, I've been using it since the RC and it's an awesome OS, very fast, secure and not one crash.

I was getting disillusioned with MS after Vista but they've really nailed this one and from me this is the best client OS MS have ever released, everything Vista should have been I guess.

I love XP mode too which is really handy for some of my older work apps.

I have a MacBook Pro and would go as far as saying I prefer it over OSX.

Personally I would always do a fresh install rather than an upgrade. Less scope for things to go wrong later on.

Me too. I have run W7 for a long time now (since the beta and then the RC). Superb OS. As has been said, everything Vista should have been. Will be upgrading with a new PC in the near future.

What I will never, ever understand is why people get excited over their PC not crashing?

If my Mac crashed, I'd be livid. I take it for granted that it doesn't.

My OS9 Macs used to bomb a lot. OS X is a great OS, OK Apple bought the technology and resources as they couldn't develop it themselves but it's very good indeed. W7 is as good though for sure, something that couldn't be said of Vista which was very poor although Windows 2000 and XP were very good IMHO. Apple haven't got it right with the iPhone though. My 3G is horriffic compared with my previous Nokia and Windows smartphones. Easily one crash per week.

Well I look after plenty of Mac's and they do crash every so often or just give you the beachball of death until you reboot so it's hardly like it's just PC's that do that.

Remember the Leopard upgrade process? Introducing the Blue Screen of Death!

Or how about Snow Leopard destroying all personal data? http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/10/13/snow_leopa...

I'd be far more livid if someone logged into my guest account and that caused Leopard to eat all of my personal data.

Claiming OSX doesn't crash or ever have problems is just silly.

I don't think he is excited about it - but certain people perpetuate the myth that windows bluescreens all the time. I also take it for granted that windows does not crash but I realise in some instances if configured incorrectly it may like any OS.

No 'E' on my box, it gave me the option to upgrade but i decided to format and do a fresh install, quite painless really smile also strangly it came with IE8 which i thought was banned due to competition rules.

That's what I was getting at. All the web-blurb I've seen refers to the EU getting a different issue of W7 because of competition commission rulings in Brussels and IE8. So I assumed the EU package (marked 'E') would be without IE8 and would be a fresh install only as opposed to an upgrade. Seems that something has been worked out behind the scenes.

This is the first OS major upgrade I've gone through and I'm just trying to avoid the hassle of saving all the settings and reinstalling all the programs if I don't need to (things like routers and settings etc). So it appears there is an upgrade/fresh install option. I may still go for the fresh install as I was having a few issues with it taking ages to load up and I'd like it to be quick-as-possible.

Also would give me the option of getting rid of all the extra HP rubbish that came with the computer when it was bought.

Got my copy yesterday too.

Problem though - I press 'any' key to boot from DVD, it loads the nice looking W7 screen, then nothing?

Any ideas?

I am currently running the 64-bit RC and didn't have any problems installing that?

How long did you leave it? It spent a good 10 minutes at the initial screen when I installed mine.

The E-edition (without IE8, and not allowing upgrades) was quietly dropped. All retail and OEM copies will be the regular Windows 7 and include IE8.

It made for a good deal over here as they were still planning to do the E-edition at the presale time so everyone who ordered then has got full product at an upgrade price.

Removed all USB connections and it worked..weird!

Now I get the joyous

DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

if I try to boot without W7 DVD in the drive... A bit of googling seems to suggest I should disconnect ALL other HDDs when installing... christ can't Microsoft get anything right?
