  • Air Hockey - The classic from the ipod/phone.
  • Angry Birds - Skwawk, superb, quack, magnificent
  • Asphalt 5 HD - cheaper than other drivers and very good indeed.
  • Aurora feint 3 - Interesting puzzle/tetris type game thing
  • Blackjack free HD - Nice little blackjack game, with a slightly annoying ad, but it's free, so what do you want? Huh?
  • Conquist - Excellent 'Risk' (board game) clone.
  • Escape XL - Interesting puzzle game.
  • Flight Control HD - Excellent update to the iPhone app - Air Traffic Control gone mad.
  • Fragger HD - Blow up insurgents in this Angry Birds style hand grenade fest
  • Forever Lost (Ep1 & 2) - Haunting puzzle adventure
  • Gene Effect - Superb cavern exploring type game. No shooting, per say. More like exploring for certain objects in order to achieve tasks. Great graphics, and controls.
  • Great Big War Game - turn based strategy war game with a sense of humour
  • Harbour master - Similar to Flight control, but wetter
  • Hitman GO - Clever strategy, based on the Hitman series. This is NOT like console versions of Hitman!
  • Labrynth 2 HD - Great fun in full ipad width. Almost as big as the real original one!
  • Tiny Thief - new game from Rovio (Angry Birds) where you have to solve levels by being a petty thief. Great humourous touches!
  • Machinarium - Beautiful visuals, strange puzzles, and just downright splendiforous...
  • MX Mayhem - Motorcross 2D game. Loved it on iphone - even more playable on pad.
  • Plants vs Zombies XL - Best game in the app store. hugely addictive. Also excellent on the iPhone
  • Pokerfree HD - Same as Blackjack free, but poker.
  • Rage HD - Looks wonderful. A little let down by it's 'rail' gameplay, a bit like House of the Dead in the Arcades. Still, very nice to play.
  • Real Racing - The best driving game on the iPad.
  • Reckless Racing - Great fun top down driving game with a Redneck theme.
  • Scrabble - The classic game, you can also download the 'Tilerack' App for iPhones and use up to four iPhones as tile racks with the iPad as the board on the table
  • Siege Hero HD - Like a first person Angry Birds
  • SimplePhysics - A great physics based game in which you build structures that have to withstand certain stress tests.
  • Solitaire King HD - Excellent card game app. Has about 10 different solitaire games in one with a lovely UI.
  • Speedball 2 - Classic old school Amiga game, just as fun and addictive as it was back in the 1990s.
** The House of da Vinci - Similar in style to The Room series of games
  • The Pinball - Excellent pinball app. Even has a 3D mode if you have some of the blue/green 3D specs.
  • Tiny Bang Story - solve puzzles by finding items in and impressive set of visuals
  • The Room - Apple's game of the year 2012. Amazing graphics and fiendish puzzles
  • The Room 2 - more of the above, but a little longer
  • The Room 3 - more of the same!
  • We Doodle - Type of online Pictionary.
  • Wimp:Who stole my pants? - Absolutely sublime platform game. Great character, good puzzles to do to get to the next level, and so on.
  • Words with friends HD - Scrabble with players from all over the world.
  • X-Plane 9 - Superb flight sim. far more involved that the iPod version
  • Zen Bound 2 - Relaxing 'thing' where you wrap rope around things. Sounds odd, but quite cool.

Utilities
  • Adobe Ideas - Drawing app designed for sketching, outlining etc.
  • Air sharing - Wireless file server. Very good indeed.
  • Air Video - Allows video streaming to ipod/iphone/ipad from remote server/computer
  • Airport Utility - If you have an apple time capsule, airport express, etc, then you can fettle it using this app. Very simple.
  • App Shopper - Great App for discovering new Apps and seeing which are on special offer/ reduced in price etc
  • BBC news. Quite decent. Nowhere near the content it could have. Will play video though, which is noce.
  • Dictionary - Does exactly what it says on the tin.
  • Document downloader- allows you to copy, paste, fax and store documents on your iPad. Good app
  • Duet. Use your iPad as an additional monitor for your Mac or PC. Half price December 2016
  • Evernote - In conjunction with the desktop app, (free), you can store webpages, pictures, and notes, etc, and sync to the cloud, and access it wherever.
  • Goodreader - multi purpose reader of pdf's and other formats. Good for transferring files in and out too.
  • iDisk - Access to mobileme iDisk storage
  • iPDF - PDF viewer, and ebook viewer (in pdf stylee). Not really used it yet, so no idea if it's any good.
  • iSSH - SSH / VNC client, useful for sysadmins etc.
  • Instapaper - Must have service that allows offline reading of web articles converted to book format.
  • iTap - Excellent RDP client
  • MyWi - Not strictly an iPad app but an iPhone app that then allows a WiFi only iPad to use the phones 3G connection, thus circumventing the need for a 3G iPad, can only be installed on Jailbroken phones as understandably apple have been a bit loathed to allow it in the app store!
  • Net Master HD - Excellent (no longer free) app that gives you all the info on your network, MAC addresses, open ports, device info, and so on.
  • Observatory - Excellent astronomical clock, showing almost everything you could want to know about position of sun, moon, planets, sunrise. Great looking alarm clock too that will stay on permanently if needed. A snip at 59p!
  • Pad info - Gives info regarding memory usage, etc.
  • Password Pig - Simple, secure password store. For Mac, Android, iOS and PC.
  • Pcalc lite - Free scientific calculator
  • Photobucket HD - Online photo storage app for ipad
  • Photopad - Dinky photo editer thingy.
  • PowerOne Financial Calculator - As it says, and is very powerful
  • Server Admin Remote - As it says, for Mac OS X Server boxes. If you have an OS X Server then this app is awesome
  • Simplenote - Syncs with the Cloud, bare bones simple note taker.
  • Songexporter - Allows shring music, and downloads over a browser, across the network.
  • Squeezpad - remote control for squeezebox
  • Sundry Notes - Seems to be aimed at students, for notes, etc. has studenty type symbol stuff, like calculus, and set theory.
  • TV Catchup. - Freeview tv streamed live on to your device. Just loaded it onto my iPad and it works great fullscreen. Open safari and log into www.tvcatchup.com then register and go to the iPhone section. If you bookmark the page once safari has saved your login details,, you can add a desktop logo like a normal app.
  • TV Guide - Free TV Guide, full screen grid style, latest update provides Sky Remote Record function
  • Things - GTD organiser app that syncs with desktop
  • VNC Mocha lite - free VNC client that is perfectly sufficient for odds and sods.
  • WeatherProHD - Detailed weather application
  • Zumocast - In the same vein as Airvideo, except this time you can stream music, and even view documents remotely. has the nice feature of being able to download a movie so you can watch on the plane, or what have you. Plays pretty much every format. Free as well. Like Airvideo, you have to download a bit of client software for the computer. Very nice front end, and looks lovely. ooh, and before I forget, it also, unlike airvideo, can be viewed in portrait mode, so you can leave it in your ipad dock should you wish.

Entertainment
  • abc - For American types, superb app similar to Hulu. Latest episodes online.
  • Break - Viral video type thingy
  • Draw - Nice little drawing program for simple doodles. Email, and save pics.
  • iBooks - Looks nice. Range of books isn;t that great, I don;t think, but the books themselves are very nicely presented.
  • IMDB - Internet movie database for the movie geeks out there.
  • Kindle - Amazon's Book Reader
  • Magic Piano - great fun for the wee ones
  • Marvel Comics - Needs USA account to get more comics Supers app though if you're into comics
  • Moto GP app... Live timing videos, and lots more £2.99 excellent resource..
  • Netflix - Awesome...
  • Pandora - Online music thingy
  • Planetary - music player that displays albums and songs as stars and planets. Very nice app.
  • Stumble Upon - Same as the firefox add-on. Takes you to websites you never heard of before
  • Substrate - Weird screensaver thing that looks quite funky wne iPad sat in it's stand.
  • Virtuoso HD - very nice piano app
  • Top 100s by Year - music streamer, select your year, it gives you the top 100 songs and plays them through your Ipad. £1.19 well spent!

Magazines/news/info
  • AccuWeather - Attractive weather app
  • At Bat - must-have for followers of baseball, HD highlights of every game
  • Autocar Car Pics - The best of the mag's news and reviews on the iPad. Updated daily.
  • Al Jazeera English - Very good news app. It IS iPod sized, but watching the live news video is fine on the 2x screen. better then BBC, etc. Little opinion based news.
  • Bloomberg for iPad - brilliantly done. Financial news / data / etc. If you haven't heard of Bloomberg then you probably don't need it
  • Epicurious - For the culinary inclined, a shedload of recipes, etc.
  • F1 Timing App - official App, similar to iPhone, but scaled up
  • Flipboard - Aggregates Facebook, Twitter, RSS & various other sources into a magazine-style format. Difficult to describe without trying it but the end result is an incredibly good-looking and easy way to view content. Excellent app. Well recommended - Apple described as “iPad App of the Year.”
  • France 24 - very nice news app. Articles, video, etc, and it works in the US, which is nice. Also discovered it has a very good map bundled with it. Can zoom in from an atlas, to street level. very impressive app. Also has live stream of France 24 news chanel
  • Go Sky watch - Interactive planetarium, with excellent data on planets, and stars. IUtilises the compass, and accelerometer to allow you to move around the sky, and correlate it with what you are seeing.
  • Guardian newsstand app - simply the best implementation of an online daily newspaper. All the content of the print edition for much less. Free 10-day trial
  • Guardian Eyewitness - Superb photography from around the world, and photo tips too.
  • iFooty - Live scores, tables, and footy news, etc.
  • Nat Geo HD - World Atlas - Very nice UI. Takes an age to download maps and isn't that fast as zooming but very nice all the same.
  • NPR - Nice articles, etc
  • Planets - 3D planetarium thingy... very nice indeed.
  • Points West - Some good videos and interviews covering lifestyle and Mercedes and it's free!
  • Popular Science - Shows what is possible for magazines with this new format
  • Reuters news pro - Online news jobby, which looks nice.
  • Spectator - If you buy the Spectator magazine, this app is worth a look - it's cheaper than the mag - £4.99 a month - and the layout is just like the mag so you miss nothing.
  • Star Walk - Great info on the night Sky
  • The Times - they've just updated this and it's a really nice app - £9.99 a month but as newspaper apps go, it's good - Currently FREE with a 30-day trial included!
  • USA Today - How online newspaper things should be
  • Weatherbug - Info packed weather app
  • Wikipanion - Wikipedia app
  • Zinio - magazine viewer - Very nicely done indeed. haven't bought a mag yet, but it came with 4 free mags, including car and driver, and macworld. very nice to read mags on.
  • Zite - Customised magazine. Similar to Flipboard, but visually more like a magazine, with articles that you pick and choose. Can take your twitter account, and create a magazine for your tastes. very nice, and slick
  • Pulse News - News and RSS and others aggregator.. Really slick interface, works very well indeed..
Communications
  • Gowalla - Social Networking Location Service that is all the rage now
  • Skype - Still tine at the mo, but works well on ipad with the inbuilt mic
Music
  • Korg iElectribe - An amazing recreation of the classic Electribe R drum machine.
  • Aweditorium - Music discovery app with a very unusual interface. You explore a treasure map of random artists and it gives a wealth of artist info, lyrics, videos etc. Brilliant. And free. Except for the iTunes purchases you'll probably end up making as a result...
  • technobox - great clone of the ACCIIIDDDD box, roland TB-303 and TR-808/909 Drum machines.
