I paid for my iPhone in cash, and then used a 12 month Simplicity Sim at a cost of £20 per month (£240) + I got cashback for £100.

Iphone was £440 so that's £580 including the contract.

If I get £300 for the phone, then that's £280 for a years iPhone use, beat that on a contract
