Are there actual suites that are needed like this? Every half decent printer I've installed worked with just add new printer -> select nearest generic driver...

It even works for the scanner, I avoid the CD's that come with printers, it's a waste of space and time, like starting a discussion with 300bhp on the rubbishness of most american cars.
You're probably, but to get the full functionality such as duplex printing etc you usually need to install the correct driver. I would have no idea how to get the scanning to work without some dedicated program to do it for me (maybe it's easy, I've never tried) and the same for the Digital Filing function. I noticed it's also sets a whole load of exceptions in the firewall on each machine - again, I would have no idea how to do that manually.

I'm just glad it works - there are plenty of posts on HP support forums from IT "professionals" who struggle for days and give up.
You're probably right, but I'm talking about the correct drivers, just not the "entire software packet". Full duplex is no problem then.

For scanning, a lot of printers offer functionality through a webservice or from the printer -> mail.

Though the software that does this and is included, is usually not that big and can easily be installed separately.

I haven't encountered firewall problems yet as they are all in lan, so no real problem?

Anyway, it does work and is really not that much of a hassle.

You should consider the Dell 1600n.
I've had mine for about 4 years now. Absolutely no problems; USB & network, fast LASER printing/copying & faxing; flatbed and auto feed, good quality colour scanning.
Superseded now but still available http://www.ciao.co.uk/Dell_Multifunction_Laser_Pri... at less than I paid! The toner looks expensive but I'm only half-way through my second one.

The Gadget Show reviewed home photo printer/scanner/fax machines last night and the Kodak model came out top. all the details are probably on their website. I've recently replaced a Lexmark wireless multifunction printer with a Kodak and so far it is performing much better - the Lexmark tended to disappear from the network and then refuse to print requiring a full re-install.

I've been programming since I was 13, and am now lead Architect. I've been fiddling with computers, OSs, registry/command line stuff for my entire life. I am the "IT support" guy for my entire family, neighbours, and other IT professionals I work with.

The HP drivers broke me.

The standard IP printer setup sort of works, then sort of doesn't. Then it can only find the scanner on Tuesday lunchtimes, when the fridge is open and it's not raining.

Then you try and print and the printer decides to tell you that a cartridge is missing. When it's there, in plain sight, in the slot. No amount of banging, re-alignining, screaming or shouting at the printer will work. The next day, it decides it's happy after all while you're at work and uses all your paper up printing the queue.

I think Lexmark use the same driver writers frown That all sounds so familiar.

Thanks - I feel better now. smile

Digital Filing (which scans directly to a pdf file) stopped working the other day. I (eventually) found that increasing the IRP stack size in XP's registry fixed it. I don't know, maybe that would be obvious to some people but it baffled me for a couple of hours.

Having said all that, it is a great machine (L7780) when it's working and I think the newer versions are even cheaper.
