Gen 2 ipad - when and what changes?
Discussion
Thinking of getting an ipad for christmas but imagine gen 2 is going to be early 2011, especially as the competition seems to be catching apple up?
Not bothered about waiting for my xmas present but wondered how long that wait might be.
And would be good if the ipad 2 came with a USB, flash and less tight-arsed memory.
Anyone got any views on when gen 2 is epxected and what enhancements it might have?

wont be a gen 2 for ages yet, they've got to get one into the hands of every fanboy before they reveal the next one, so they can maximise income from existing owners upgrading.
I think they'll do a mini version first with a 7" screen then replace the original one in say a year/18 months.
What I would say is I'd wait until January - lots of decent android tablets are due out Q1 next year, several manufacturers are waiting for the next release of android (known as gingerbread) before they go to market. For what its worth I don't think the android tablets available now are much cop.

The money is that it'll have cameras, be a bit thinner, a bit lighter, and maybe a faster processor. Best guess is that it'll be announced March 2011.As for the competition, the betting is that many companies are holding off until after Christmas now. The notable Samsung Tab is out, a few mid priced machines are out, but nothing is really making the sales. The Toshiba just got pulled by Dixons for being unreliable, so that'll be missing for Christmas also.

Looking like January most likely for the unveiling, following a launch later in Q1/ Early Q2.
The rumours are suggesting 3G will become standard on all models. We can also expect speed improvements with increased RAM, and a camera front/ rear is a definite.
A change in screen/ resolution is unlikely as it will mean all the Apps need re-writing so it will most likely keep the 1024 x 768 10" display for another generation or two, remember the iPhone went through 3 generations before getting upgraded to a high-res 'Retina display'.
Not really much else they could change to be honest. Perhaps improve the design a bit, make it thinner and give it a longer battery, integrated SD slot etc. Double the storage capacity at each price point maybe? Its already the best tablet on the market so they only have themselves to beat. The current generation just got a fairly decent upgrade today simply through the updated iOS 4.2 software.
A few websites have suggested a new version is due before Christmas this year, but I think that's total BS and highly unlikely. Apples 'Holiday 2010' line-up is complete.

No change. Steve Jobs has categorically said 7" tablets are "too small" and "DOA". I compared a Galaxy Tab head on with my iPad a couple of days ago, even though on paper there is on 3" between them in reality the Tab is pretty much half the size of the iPad.The mini version of the iPad is the iPhone/ iPod Touch, there definitely won't be another in-between.

USB and flash was what I was hoping for! And Q1 2010 launch The rumours are suggesting 3G will become standard on all models. We can also expect speed improvements with increased RAM, and a camera front/ rear is a definite.

I reckon there is more chance of the second coming than Apple including/allowing a flash client on iOS.

I am no expert but i thought that was a negative as lots of websites use it including youtube (which I often use for music)?I reckon there is more chance of the second coming than Apple including/allowing a flash client on iOS.

No idea why there would be a rear facing camera, as someone alluded to earlier in this thread? Most are put in to a protective wallet, so why a rear camera?
Umm....To take pictures?Front and rear camera are pretty much guaranteed IMO.
Rearward? Hmm... then people might not buy the camera connection kit...
TBH, if you are going to wait, you'll never buy any tech...
ok cross flash off the list
camera was never on the list as I have no intention of taking pictures with a bloody great tablet which is a sofa web surfing device for me
presumably missing something again here, but if you download from itunes on to ipad, how do you synch to your ipods if there is no USB ?

What?If you've a computer being used for syncing the iPad to, why in Christ's name would you expect, never mind want, to use the iPad to hook up to an iPod?
The computer is the central hub, everything else is effectively a peripheral device.
You don't warm up your dinner plates in the oven, then expect them to heat your vegetables for you, do you?

I think by this you mean if you download songs from itunes store on the ipad directly, how would you then transfer them to your ipod. Well most would sync ipad to home computer, and then sync ipod to it. but there are cables on the market which you can transfer ipod > ipod, and ipad > ipod.
Hope that helps,
also New ipad will be announce at CES show in Jan, but wont get released till April/May time, (happened smae time last year) IMO i think thinner ipad with retna screen, front camera for facetime, hopefully intergrated sim card (they are planning this for new iphone) screen size the same, faster processor, maybe in white (not)
