On the N40L, does the shipped 250Gb disk take up one of the 4 HDD bays?

Yes it does, but you can move it up in the cdrom bay...I've currently got 6 drives in mine...the top ones rest on each other with some plastic inbetween.....hehe

I got a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter and stuck the included drive in the optical drive bay. I've actually used sticky backed velcro and stuck an SSD to the back of the server (above the large fan) so I now have: - 64GB SSD - System Drive
- 500GB Caviar Black - 'Odds and Sods' disk
- 2x2TB Caviar Green - Data
- 1x2TB Caviar Green - Backup
With the device that JonRB has posted you could easily get 9 disks in total if you had enough SATA ports

So the qnap is going to be retired just yet... think my proliant has been on 24/7 for nearly 2 years now, and no problems whatsover, they are great bits of kit

I'd upgraded my desktop machine to a 256GB SSD and had that spare... so why not I've got no reason to have the 500GB Caviar Black in there either ... but I have. Geek rules, doesn't have to make sense!

I have the 250Gb with a 3.5 to 5.25 converter fitted quite snuggly in the top bay.
I have server 2008 R2 installed currently but feel that it is overkill and doesn't really provide the streaming and backup services I want.
Thinking of getting WHS 2011, as i believe it is more suited to my needs. does anybody else run WHS over server 2008?

I was intrigued too, did a bit of google foo & found it in the uk from play.com good price compared to some of my other searches. http://www.play.com/Search.html?searchstring=SATSA...

They take sata 2.5" drives (laptop drives )so that 4 drives can be fitted into the space of a cd-rom enclosure.

Thought that was the case but wanted it confirmed. Not sure I can afford to fill all the bays PLUS 4 drives in the ODD bay with the current disk prices, nice to know for the future though

I suspect you're not really serious but be careful about you choice of RAID controller, you can't fit one that has the connectors on the side as the drive bay blocks the connectors. Also try and get on that can utilise the SAS connector currently used for the backplane that's installed already. Basically, this rules out most of the cheap cards from ebay!

I use a HP410 array controller has 2 SATA/SAS connectors .. .cost as much as the N36L !!!
