Four bays. I've not looked at it much yet but I know it has RAID, but only RAID0 + RAID1 so I imagine it's a very basic onboard controller.

It looks like the drives go in caddies, can someone who's got one say if it comes with the empty caddies or not? Or are you stuck buying £££ HP branded drives?

You get 1 full caddy and 3 empty caddies, which you can put your own drives in biggrin

Chaps,

Thanks for the heads up this looks like a bargain.

Few questions around the cashback if anyone can help?

It's pretty geared towards businesses (cheques made out to company name, everyone based around invoice date etc) any problems in using the offer as an individual? I can't see anything that says otherwise but at £112 its a steal. £200 not so much.

The offer runs from 1-31st december and seems to either revolve around just the invoice date *or* invoice and shipping dates depending on which bit of blurb you read. How likely am I to still squeeze it in given we're about to hit the christmas dead zone? I'm not sure what they will qualify as an invoice, nor what it247 will send out and when (i.e will it come with the server...which may not be delivered until after the 31st at this rate...)

thoughts welcomed...

I'm having some trouble justifying NOT buying this - more memory, another disk and this seems like a potential ideal candidate for a home server as a virtual server test bed.

I think the only thing that I'd have to clear up to myself is which OS to put on it... If I put Linux or equivalent on it can I run it easily as a virtual host and be able to RDP on to it?

Also I would have to build it at work and install it at home later as I don't have a monitor at home....

So PH - tell me I dont need this....

Chap, I've got it up and running on one of mine now - takes a while to boot BUT is pretty snappy once logged on, much to my surprise!

If you want anything run on it before I start loading it up with st like BES then give me a shout...!

I picked mine up today. Just away to install SBS 2008, I stuck 4 GB in to it, a little fiddley to get teh MB out (it sits in a tray).

Just have to copy the SBS disc to a UDB drive now and I'll get started.

i've decided to build this into a HTPC / NAS
this is what i'm gonna do-
-add a bluray disc drive to the front
-add a HDMI graphics card
http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/it...
add 4gb of RAM - Sell the 1GB that comes with it
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/17589588/Crucial-CT2...
-add 2 x 2tb HDD (raid 1 i think) so one mirrors the other
-have a seperate 1tb HDD for downloads.
-add an IR receiver
Was just wondering what OS to run on it, linux or windows based? and will the processor be able to run XBMC smoothly?
i was gonna have the OS on the 160gb HDD that comes with it, then add other programmes on the 160gb HD such as azureus (for torrent DLs) & DVDFAB (for ripping blurays)

I was thinking of using a linux based OS because they use less power but as i'm a noob I may be better with a windows based OS but have read they use more power and could cause issues later on.

Anyone see any issues with the set up i'm proposing?

Various people I work with have bought these. They all seem pretty happy. If I hadn't just bought a nas, I'd be tempted.

Right, I've just installed the 64 bit version of Passmark on my old hound of an SBS 2k8 Box.

http://www.passmark.com/products/pt.htm

It scored 469.8 for what that's worth....

Oh and it uses an MX-5 in part of the graphics testing!

Me either - I have a NAS - I can't really justify this.

Well, not easily anyway.

It's good if you want to fanny around with VMWare or something. There's a good guide somewhere that shows you how to build an ESX install on a USB key, and run it off that smile I'll try and dig it out.

If you are installing Windows and using RAID, you'll need the raid card driver from here
