I'm having a clear out, is it safe to remove the Acer programs on computer? eManagement stuff?
Try this works a treat on mine. Stops programs from starting or delays start until later. Saved over one minute on start up (vista)http://www.soluto.com/Download/

Aren't most laptops made by the same handful of manufacturers anyway?
Yes, but the design work is usually done by the brand company.voyds9 said:

My sisters wants a new laptop and asked me to have look to see what she can get for her £500 budget. Had a quick look at all the usual suspects and the Acer laptops are coming out cheaper like for like compared to Dell, HP etc. When I say like for like I mean processors, RAM, Hard drive and graphics card, about the limit of my knowledge.
Basically want to know if there's a catch and Acer's should be avoided.
I bought an Acer for my kids to use, it's a net book rather than a laptop, I guess that means it's fine for browsing rather than computing. Anyhoo, it's been pretty reliable.Basically want to know if there's a catch and Acer's should be avoided.
I tend to find acer just don't have the build quality some other laptops do. What I mean by this is cheap plastics, cheap feel, inaccessible parts and flawed design (IE dust accumulation on heatsink that you can't clean without stripping the whole laptop down)
Honestly, check out pcspecialist, they seem to beat everyone on prices and I'm definitely considering getting one now.

Three Acers here:
1) Aspire 8930 as a desktop replacement - 18.4", Blu-Ray etc - very happy with it for over a year
2) Travelmate something for last 4 years, brilliant little thing, still runs strong, I love its alloy housing.
3) just bought a touchscreen, tablet/laptop 11" (don't remember the model) - very nice for travel laptop, although a bit on the heavy side.
I would definitely buy/recommend Acer over ANY other laptop manufacturer.

Won't touch them with a bargepole.
2003 I bought 2 Acer laptops, both high end Travelmate 800s. One was a Centrino 1.3GHz at about £1300, one a Centrino 1.6GHz at £1600.
The former of these 2 had the Motherboard fail outside of warranty. The latter had the Motherboard fail twice during the warranty period.
Admittedly these took a beating but they were from the Acer 'business' range at the time. Screens were good though (1400*1050 15" ones).
I now use Apple/Lenovo laptops.
