Oooh, handy at the Chinese Supermarket! Is there an Android version?I take it WP plays nice with Macs since you're using it CJ, the lack(?) of Zunes for Linux or Plan9 is a bit of a show stopper for me...

given that Translator is a Microsoft product, I'll let you work out whether there's an android version. I take it WP plays nice with Macs since you're using it CJ, the lack(?) of Zunes for Linux or Plan9 is a bit of a show stopper for me...
I use the windows phone 7 connector for Mac quite happily.
Do you actually use Plan 9 for anything other than going "I'm quite proud of myself for being able to install Plan 9"?

Cheers CJ, I'll check those out later
Another problem... when copying videos to my Android phone the procedure was.
Plug phone into computer.
Copy video file(s) over.
Unplug
Play with MX Video Player or similar.
Now for the 710 the procedure is.
Plug phone into computer.
Copy video file(s) to phone using Zune.
Zune then converts the file then copies it over
Unplug
Play with video player on 710.
Now that's all fine and well... except the 'convert' bit is somewhat straining my laptop's 1.6GHz E350 processor (essentially designed for netbooks, in my 15inch laptop it's like putting a 1.3l Fiesta engine in a 5-Series)... this might take a while...
You can turn that off in the Zune options. The option is along the lines of telling it not to convert the files or seomthing, I forget now.Another problem... when copying videos to my Android phone the procedure was.

MS or a third party?Zunes seems less loved than iTunes...

You get live CDs these days!I've had abit of a play but it is very much a network OS and is pretty pointless on a single machine. It could be very good in a colaberative envvronment I reckon, somewhere like Bell labs...
Okay just tried to add two ringtone files (MP3s) to the phone.
And failed.
Surely no big deal? Just dump the files onto the phone, assign them, job done.
Right?
Wrong.
First you need to add them to Zune (as per this guide http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/... )
... okay... I add the files into a folder under the 'watched folders' for Zune, but can't find them... This is quite difficult since I can arrange imported music by any number of categories... title, artist, genre, album etc. etc. But not by folders... Why? Computers have these wonderful things call 'Folders' (or Directories), so why can't many of these Media players grasp this and use them? Sigh...
Okay so eventually I found the files (under 'Unknown Artist' or something). Then I need to set the 'Genre' to 'Ringtone' manually... right here I go...
It was then at this point when I realised it only imported one file. Odd. After some more cursing I try to get Zune to play the files. Yay! I managed to load in both files! Oh wait, hang on... why do those files sound the same? WTF?
It looks like it's imported the files, and because the filenames/sizes are similar, some utter fkwit of a software "engineer" (an insult to engineers) has tried to be fking 'clever' (or in reality being a utter fktard) by putting into some fking 'clever' algorithm to think "Oh hang on. These files are exactly the same! (they're not ttface) I'll just import one of them and point the two references to the same file" YOU fkING NEEP!
Guess I'll just stick with the stock ringtones as it's too much fking work to achieve something so fking basic... etc.
ETA - I think this is the issue I'm seeing

Yes that shows Nokia would have been where Samsung are, had they taken on Android.
Nokia management's biggest mistake.
Together with dropping their own family jewels "old core products and nokia mobile os" though that pales into insignificance.
Does it show that? How do you arrive at that conclusion?Nokia management's biggest mistake.

The magic bullet for Nokia is not and was not any particular software platform, it is and was having non-retarded management. I have no doubt that Nokia would have fked up their hypothetical Android developments, too.

Agreed. Nokia made some craking products, but I'd also be curious to see what they'd do to keep up with the market.Samsung makes everything, from brilliant AMOLED screens to great processors. Apple have a big marketing mill that makes them sell at a huge profit -> more money for R&D an can get some good pieces of hardware from Samsung,LG,... because of huge volumes.
I fail to see where Nokia could add on that or where it's place could be. I don't think it'd be able to compete with the likes of Samsung and Apple, maybe just get a place in the margin like LG.
Edit: forgot to add my conclusion

Management is what has screwed Nokia over the years - not quite total incompetence, but not far short of that.
On the subject of Nokia own goals .. i was almost tempted to go for their latest 808 cameraphone. Then i found out the screen is no better than the N97. Why put such a medicore screen with a high quality camera?! I forgot to add - the battery capacity is from a 2007-era phone.

A friend who makes big money in the city has a C2 he’s always had a Nokia and wanted 4 day battery life for business trips. With his money you’d think he’d have an iPhone but with one day battery life he gave the one he had to his Girl Friend.
Oh God. It's like being stuck in an anecdote Bermuda Triangle...Why didn't the 'friend' buy a BB? My work Curve is a hateful phone, but the battery almost never lets me down on work trips.

Unless you can find a phone with a 7000 x 5000 resolution screen, you're never going to be able to view a picture from the 808 on a mobile screen.Edited by fido on Friday 20th July 10:06
Battery lasts about 3 days, even with mobile data and bluetooth on 24/7. It doesn't need to have a huge capacity as the 808 doesn't need a power-hungry quad core CPU.
The 808 is a great phone if photography is your thing. OK, so you can't choose from 700 different fart apps, but if that's what you're after you can just buy an iphone or Galaxy and put up with 1 day battery life and crap photos
I'm back to using my Android (Motorola Atrix). However despite this and my earlier rants (the one about ringtones was more to vent out - I felt good after that...) I'm pretty impressed with it overall every time I use it. Few notes
Great user interface as always.
Battery life is much better than my Atrix - it can easily last a full day with several hours use. Although to be fair the my Atrix might be slightly overclocked
It's also a lot better for taking videos and camera shots. Also the audio is much better in video. When I went to Knockhill BSB I didn't hesitate taking the 710.
Facebook/twitter integration is great, although updates aren't immediately pushed onto the phone like the android Facebook app.
Voice recognition is faultless, quite spooky.
In all honesty if it was my only smart phone I would use it and not be wanting for something else. The biggest problem is the lack of quality apps compared with Android. It's a pity they didn't enable compatibility of older Windows mobile apps but I can understand wanting to move on and keep up with Android/iOS in a short space of time. Plus it might have crippled the phone like the 5800?
I can't see what problem Pr1964 has - Nokia seem to have a fairly decent range of low end/basic phones with good battery life? And like I say I'm impressed with my 710...
