Announced yesterday (13 feb 2011):

- 4.3" Super AMOLED Plus display
- Android 2.3
- 1Ghz Dual Core
- 1GB RAM
- 16/32GB (SD expansion -> up to 32GB)

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/13/samsung-galaxy-...

This could well be a candidate for my next smartphone, but maybe I'll wait what Apple has to say smile.
Personally, I'm not buying another iphone if they keep their 3.5" display as I found 4" much nicer to browse, and it's available on phones that aren't even bigger than an iPhone.
I'm curious as to how (physically) big the phone will be with a 4.3" display, but to my guess it will be about as big as a phone should get for me.

Very curious to have a play!

PS: I really don't like the "design" of this one, much nicer (to look at) phones around. But looks is just a small part, as my phone is a an important part of my business

What do you guys think?

Just read:

66.1 mm (2.60 in) (w)

HOWLY fk THAT IS ONE THIN PHONE

I wonder why this trend is to keep it that thin?
Agreed, a phone should not look like the over 2cm thick keyboard sliders HTC had in its WinMo days, but the iphone 4 is 9.3 mm (0.37 in), and that's thin enough.

Why would Samsung try and make it THAT thin, instead of using the extra mm for a (much) bigger battery?

I don't think it is that thin, that's just the measurement at the thinnest point

and why make it that thin? so they can try and take the claim of "worlds thinnest smartphone" from the iphone, also it's a samsung, great on paper, but rubbish to own!

it will be very interesting to see what the battery life with a big screen, dual core processor and super thin form factor will be like!!!

Probably to stop it feeling like a very big phone in light of the dimensions required to house a screen that big. It's still got a large total volume to house batteries etc and the Super-AMOLED screen is significantly thinner than a conventional LCD.

Definitely an very interesting bit of kit, wish I didn't have over a year to go on my contract!

I have about 3 months left on my contract and choosing the next phone is becoming more difficult with this phone, LG Optimus x2 and 3D along with the Motorola Atrix etc all coming out soon.

1) It's at it's THICKEST point
2) It's not that big overall, as it has very, very narrow edges next to the screen
3) Have you owned a Galaxy S? Or just your iphone.

Take your fanboyism to the Apple threads please.

Well all I can say is I hope its better than the original Galaxy S. What a thoroughly rubbish POS, possibly the only phone that I actually ended up wanting to stamp on after a while.

Great screen, half decent camera, but everything else about it was terrible. Poor sound quality through the headphones, random rebooting / shutting down, GPS that basically didnt work (for sat nav purposes), unstable OS, laggy performance, etc etc. Utter dung. I'll never buy another again. And before someone says I must have bought a pup, all of the issues I experienced were documented on XDA developers. Anyone who buys a Samsung phone really needs their head examining after their past track record IMO.

ETA Just watched the video, looked pretty unresponsive at times to me, and knowing Samsung, that'll not improve. Not impressed TBH. Touchwiz still looks light years behind HTC Sense.

i have a galaxy S (and an IP4) and the S is superb. As fast as an IP, better screen for normal eyes at a normal distance.

and being thin i can keep it in a nice, Italian leather, flip case which also holds my credit cards - so no wallet needed.

would get another in an instant (unless I suddenly became a woman or a child - IP's are nice and simple and thats handy for people that dont know their DNLA from their DVLA)

It's ok. By the time your contract is up we'll be on quad core. 4G will be with us then so perfect time to upgrade.

Wouldnt worry, the Desire HD is a great phone, and although the samdung will look better on paper, if its anything like the old one, it'll be full of bugs and a pain to own.

I've since learned not to worry about spec, and more about what the thing is actually like to use.

yikes...

I'm not sure I evened compared it to something apple did I? just answering why they would make it that thin?

my mistake on the thickness thing, something I read on it earlier said the camera stuck out at the back, but that must not be the case

and no, I don't own a Galaxy S, I'm not sure how that is relevant?

Am in the same situation, but then i thought what is wrong with my Desire that i need to upgrade to? It's a perfect phone for me and
thought there is no point in keeping up with the Joneses. I really cant see what can be better than this phone.

You made that statement based on:
1) "internet rumours": Really? Based on that, you can't even make a phonecall with the iPhone 4
2) Personal experience with Samsung: Ok, what phone? A comparable high-end phone (like the Galaxy S) or some of the £70 phones they chuck out

I've had a couple of cheap samsungs and most of them were good value for money, I know some people with a Galaxy S who have been very happy with them, although their wide range of phones does work in both directions:

1) Galaxy S is a top model and does very good for the entire range and image, much like for example the Mercedes SLS
2) The lower ranges could have some turds in them, which might put people off the higher ranges (for example the Mercedes A)

That said, making a statement like that (like it's a general truth) is pretty bold, esp about a phone that isn't even out yet.

Looks nice. I'm in the market to buy a new phone and not tied to a contract. Is there any news with what HTC might bring out? I'm assuming it'll be around the same time as the IP5 on the basis that the Desire came out around the IP4? Impressed with the Desire HD but not enough to have one for 24 months which is probably near the end of its cycle before I buy...
