It would be useful if people could post whether it's their own personal connection at home, or a work connection for 1,000 users...

Five minutes ago, pretty much on spec.
Not much difference from results late at night, but did have one a few weeks back where d'ld speed was barely 2 Mb/s, but upload was still on spec. Ping was 'normal' too.

Home Cable provider via Belkin N router, on iPad.

Cable via Belkin N router.
You should try it via direct link, rather than over wifi.

I've spoken with my ISP this week and they state that the official rated speed for my line is 512k.

However, read it and weep:

I suspect that the discrepency is my wireless - as I'm about 15m and a 2 foot thick wall away...
You do realise that the speed that your getting on Speedtest is higher than the 'offical rating' given to you.

TalkTalk - advertised as up to 8Mb. Everyone says max line can provide is 2Mb.
Ping is usually around 68, and DL speeds sometimes peak at 2.8-2.9Mb.

Pretty much exactly what I pay for. At 3am it has gone as high as 12, which is nice. I'm guessing at some point they'll bump the tariffs around and give me a bit more, but it's plenty for downloading TV shows.

Legally.

Of course.

I also live in a very rural area (not actually on the UK mainland) and get my BB from a colour/fruit based ISP for which I pay nothing per month as it comes free with my mobile phone, but I seem to be getting a better result than you.

this is my home network, but the cost is subsidised by work, I pay about £35 a month but that does include the 2nd line rental, work pay £15 a month so cost to me is £20.

How are you getting nearly 100Mbit when the FTTC limit is 40Mbit?
