Nope - to the right, toward the rubber doo-dah.

Grips will sort it.

Sadly not frown
The balljoints are integral to the shocks - they are repaired by injecting them with polymer.

It's a disgraceful bit of design - IMO a balljoint is a service item - especially these days with the state of the roads and speed humps. So a service item that is going to wear out every few years is built into a part that costs £1260 + vat. Madness.

This thread is extremely helpful for us CL owners too. I'll be investigating a slight knocking on my car in the next couple of weeks.... not quite so worried now!

The balljoints are ok as long as you catch them early enough. Let the ball get damaged or corroded etc and you've had it.

I'll be having a look in the next week or so. It's hardly anything at the moment. No feeling and inaudible with the windows up. If they are shot, I'll pull the shocks off and arrange a trip to Manchester (via Liverpool) to see the folks.

I'll keep the thread updated, the more people know about this, the better. I've always worked on my cars in the past. Aside from the stupid amount of electrics, these cars, however complex, are only held together with nuts and bolts and shouldn't pose a threat for a reasonable home mechanic.

(fingers crossed laugh )

Thread necro... I'm thinking of using this service. can any of you chaps who had this done a couple of years ago comment on the longevity? (assuming you still post here!)

I'm surprised a service like this is not more widely known about as there are many cars which have seemingly unreplaceable ball joints as part of a bigger (and more expensive!) component.

Unfortunately - sorry - fortunately - I got rid of the car in May 2011, the ball joints were fine. However the rest of the car was st.

The joints are fine all this years on. Car is great, just had a crankshaft position sensor changed. Touch wood the car has been pretty reliable. It's going to be very difficult to replace, the only car that makes 'sense' is the SL 65 amg.

Dogstar, what are you driving now?

I'm on my second one (got the first in May 2012 (not 2011 as I said above) and another this year in May.

I have just been told the same thing by a local MOT place... they insisted that it cannot be repaired and that it's £1000+ for a new one...

I was very annoyed until a quick google revealed some great info on this - this really needs to be made more apparent to those who would otherwise shell out good money for something that can be repaired!

I had mine done a couple of years ago - probably about 10,000 miles have gone by and it's fine.

Thought it would be worth sharing this, the strut boots are now available (non Mercedes) from China https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32881333740.html?s... my Dad got a couple fitted to his SL55 as they had perished due to age the quality seems good as well only time will tell with this kind of item though.

Very useful thank you. My last SL55 issue about 18 months ago was the EIS failing, and only allowing the car to turn over in warm temperatures. A new one and all keys coded from Mercedes Benz was required.
