I bought an SL amg with this amazing engine 25,000 on the clock fantastic car, what else can you buy with 600bhp+ (not after market tuned) for this sort of money. Provided you can afford to run them the cars with this hand built engine are a bargain imo.

I also have one of these monsters. It is a 2008 model and in Black. I bought it with 5000 on the clock and have now just hit 40000 in 3 years. This car is amazing. Power, class, comfort etc etc - I could go on. I think the thread originator has done a great job in providing his views. There are two problems with this car however. 1. The sound system is appalling to manage and the Ipod does not recharge - for a £170k car that is pretty poor. I am not sure if it can be fixed retrospectively. 2. I now cannot think what I would replace this car with, except another one!! No car i have driven or could imaging would be better than this. The Bentley and RR contenders are too big and in your face, and would not have the performance. This car is the best!!

For those of us on more modest budgets, does a re-mapped S600 Bi-Turbo come anywhere close?

I don't really have a problem with the sound system, it's pretty fantastic with the HK setup. Are you talking about the Ipod integration? I have the latest one fitted and it charges the Ipod no problem. But, it is very slow to access via Comand. There was a major update to Comand for the Mk2 W221 S class and they massively improved the Ipod access on these. Tis the only problem with the car as the tech goes back to 2005 of course. It's still pretty amazing but the brand new cars are certainly better in this area. Hence why my next car will probably just be the facelift version of this, or if I can stretch to in a few years the new S65 which will undoubtedly have the 7 speed box by then.

The problem I have with it is that mine does not recharge and it is a nightmare to work through the command system. It sounds good though. I had a Bang & Oullson system with my previous car, an Audi A8 4.2 diesel - now that was a well thought out system and excellent sound. For the money on the Merc i am surprised that they had now fixed the weakness in the system earlier - The Audi was a 2007 and this S65 is a 2008!!

Would you mind telling me how much the DMS up upgrade was and how long it took, as I am interested in taking mine in for the same.

Erm sorry can't remember, just drop Rob a line at DMS he will give you the full SP. Definitely worth the money. Much more responsive after the remap.
Yes, the facelift for the S only occured in what 2010? C and E had the new leccy bits much earlier. Bit of a pain. Phone integration isn't a patch on the newer models either.

Lagerlout said: Had it done yet? What did you think? Not yet. I am having new tyres fitted this week (you know the frequency and cost of that!!) and at the same time the alloys redone to the original condition. At the end of May it is then going into the paint shop for a bonnet paint and sorting of some scuffs on front and rear bumpers - to get the paint and body work up to scratch. I am using a paint shop I used very recently for a 911 and they did a great job. Then it is in for the engine remap in Blackpool. I thought about all this for a about one second only. I could not think what to change the car for, I love this car, have done 40000 trouble free and beautiful miles in it so I thought I would treat it to a freshen up and do another 40000 miles. There is something about what this car makes me feel every time i get in and drive it. I am sure that you will be one of the few people who will understand this!

I sold my S65 yesterday after 4 happy years. The new owner bought it without ever having seen an S65 before (he's owned an E63 though) and today he started the long drive home. Check the distance and consumption. He said the car is driving like a dream.
